Feeling waxes strong in Masterton and other Wairarapa towns regarding the half-holiday question. All the towns are now observing tho half-holiday on Saturday, but polls on the question are likely to bo taken in conjunction with the borough elections in April. It is reported that there are ove.r 500 signatures to a petition circulated in Masterton to have a poll taken. Similar petitions are being circulated in Carterton and Greytown, whilst Featherston has already decided to take a poll. The opinion seems to Im genonal among the principals of the larger business concerns of Masterton that the Friday late night and Saturday half-holiday constitute an arrangement quite as good as any other. It is enid that business is more evenly distributed, over the weekdays. and that tho ultimate) returns ►hcf.ild compoire flavourably with ■ tfho periods when the major portion of the shopping was done on Saturday afternoon and evening. One business man said that his trade last Friday evening showed a better return than it had ever done on a Saturday evening. Tho opinion is held that now tho day has been' changed to Saturday, tho new arrangement should bo given at least a year’s trial before a poll is taken. |
