THE RUGBY GAME
WELLINGTON UNION
DELEGATES’ ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the Wellington Rugby Union was held, last night. Dr. A. K. Newman, M.F., presiding over a large attendance of delegates. Applications were received for the affiliation of the Donbank, Wesley, and Eastbourne Football Clubs.
Mr. A. C. Kitto stated that he represented the Y.M.C.A. Club, and as "Donbank” was a branch of the Y.M.C.A., he-, could not see why the young men fiom there could not join the Y.MC.A. Club.
It was decided l to postpone accepting the application from "Donbank” in order to see if that club could not amalgamate with Y.M.C.A.
The affiliation of the other two clubs w'as granted. Mr. W. F. Hornig (Oriental) moved/ the adoption of the annual report and ballanceusheet, details of which have been published in The Dominion. Mr. J. Moffatt (Berhampore) claimed that the outgoing committee had not given sufficient consideration to junior players. Several speakers disagreed with Mr. Moffatt, and considered that good work had been done by the outgoing committee generally. Charging for Ladies. Mr. W. J. llardham, V.C., thought a mistake had been made in charging ladies for admission to the Athletic Bark. Ladies who patronised tho park, he said, performed a good service in exercising a restraining influence among "barrackers.” Mr. Hardham also suggested that more encouragement should be given to school football, and thought it would be a good idea if sports masters were appointed in the schools. He also was of opinion that club football had suffered last year because of the fact that too many representative matches were played. Reference having been made to the fund for injured players, Mr. Hornig (chairman of the outgoing committee) mentioned that the committee had deferred bringing down a comprehensive proposal, as a national insurance fund scheme was to be submitted to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union. The lowest quote that could be obtained from any insurance company was £8 15s. 6d. per team, consequently it could be seen what a big handicap the Wellington Union would be undertaking if it decided to go on with such a scheme on its own. He believed that the insurance fund needed to be placed on a sound basis, and it might be that larger subscriptions from the clubs would be necessary. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. In thanking the meeting for re-electing him to the presidency, Dr. Newman commented on the good season that was experienced last year. There certainly had been too many representative matches, but this was due to the union having received calls for assistance from smaller unions. The prospects for next season were good, and the visit of the South Africans would be looked forward to with interest.

It was purely for business reasons that he was retiring, but perhaps on some future occasion h. might be able to take a more active part in the management of the game.
