In the Carterton Magistrate’s. Court on Thursday, before Mr. S. P. L. Free, S.M., Miss Catherine Phillips, formerly schoolmistress at East Taratahi, claimed -2260 damages for alleged assault from Percy Southey, and his wife and Stanley' Green and his wife. Defendants are parents of scholars attending the school, and friction between the parties had arisen over the alleged harsh treatment of the teacher towards the children and the closing of the school without authority. The assault was alleged to have taken place one evening in September, when the wives of defendants visited the plaintiff for an explanation. There was a gtrnea-al denial that any violence waff used. A broom that was alleged to have played a part in the assault was introduced by the plaintiff. Several witnesses were heard, and the Magistrate reserved his decision.
