“I will never conduct an orchestra without women in future; they do their work so well,” declared Sir Henry Wood at the Brighton School of Music prize"Women have great talent for the violin,” added Sir Henry. “They have a wonderful delicacy of touch they are sincere. They do not drink, and they do not smoke as much as men. “In the Queen’s Hall orchestra they have given a certain tone to our rehearsals and a different spirit to our performances. . “I was the first conductor to employ women in tho orchestra professionally. That was nine years ago- When 1 wanted sixteen players, I heard DO ladies play, and they far overtopped the boys in technique and certainly m enthufiiirsm. T “\s a choral conductor, before J was an orchestral conductor, I lamented the fact that choral singing was on the down grade. Our great festivals are going to their doom.”
