THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS By Glihoob. The Daruievirke meeting will be opened to-day, and will conclude to-morrow. Class is not well represented, albeit the open sprint event will see the two leading threey ear-olds. Duo and Gasbag, in action, but as the pair have been spelled recently it is not likely that .they will be forward enough to show winning form at the, meeting. e , , -rr 9 Signysian, who is top-weight in the Hack Hurdles l2st. 11b., won like a good horse at Woodville, and though the distance to-day is two furlongs further, the moderate lot opposed to him may not be able to extend the fine jumping son of Elysian. The maidens are a very poor lot, the best known of them being Sunbath, one of A. Shearsby’s team, Miss Elva, who has been placed on several occasions, and the Demosthenes gelding Ducalion, who hails from Hastings. . , , None of the three top-weights in the President's Handicap have raced lately, but Murihiku showed winning form at Woodville, and appears to be at the top of her form just now. The unreliable Bonnie Briar continues to gallop well on the tracks, but cannot be induced to repeat the form in a race. . Verbosity is the best-performed hnck in the Tahoralte Welter Handicap, which has drawn a, singularly weak field. Idle Talk is top-weight in the which will give an indication of the . strength of the field. Pente ran a good race in th/; open welter handicap at Trentham, and ngaln at Hawera. If she has gone .on the right way, the full sister to Karo should account for the others, of whom Sycorax and Scornful may be the best. „ ■ Fulsome, the full sister to Humbug, is to make her reappearance in the Juvenile Handicap, in which she meets the dual Woodville winner, Soldier’s Love, on equal terms. The pair may be fully extended by Amorel, who was not lucky at Wanganui. , . Prince Martian may be at a very short price in the open welter handicap, tut he mav encounter very strong opposition from the useful Handy. Admiration reads well in the hack welter handicap. The Nelson mr.'tintr will take place today, and some thirty-five visiting horses were shipped by the Mapourika on Monday last. The Trentham pair, Insurrection and Royal Exchange, were sent across, though neither look like wining a race. Mntntua and Sir Fanciful will be well backed in whatever they start in, and so will In the Pink and Barleycorn, who carry Mr. J. J. Corry’s colours, but the top-weight in the Stewards Handicap may find it a very hard job to present Trentham Rose with 341 b. , NEWMARKET YEARLING SALES. /Rec. March 1. 7.30 P-m-> Melbourne. March 1.
