By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, March 1. During tho past week or two the wholesale meat market has weakened considerably, and prices to-day are very much easier. Most of the large exporting firms have notified sellers that they have reduced their buying prices, and it was reported to-day that one exporting firm had ceased buying altogether. The head of ojio stock and station house was asked if the present waterside trouble had anything to do with the fall in values. He said it had not. The cause of tho weak market, he continued, was the fact that the demand from outride markets had dropped very appreciably. The prices of hides, skins, and pelts had also slumped heavily, and even at the current low values they were practically unsaleable. j To show how values for export have fallen, the following buying quotations just issued by a leading New Zealand export firm should be read with the greatest interest. A comparison ie made in the case of beef with the quotations of February 15, a fortnight ago:— Beef, per 1001 b. Feb. 15. Mar.l.
per lb. Up to 421 b - 7Jd. Up to 42-501 b 1 63d. Over 501 b 53d. ' Seconds Wether. Up to 641 b 93d. 64—701 b 2?d. Over 701 b 2Jd. Ewes. Up to 641 b. 2i!d. 64-7211> IM. Over 721 b Hd. The sharp fall in prices must prove most unplensnnt to those farmers who purchnred land during the war period at inflated values. CANTERBURY GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS By TelegraphAssocintion. Christchurch, March 1. In the Canterbury markets the general tone is very depressed. Outside business has been hampered by the industrial trouble, but in any case little business was in prospect. Merchants are stocked up with practically all classes of products from last year, and a. clearance' ' will -have to be effected before there is any movement towards meeting the present season’s offers. Wheat is in fairly freely, late samples (Allowing an 'improvement <ln quality. Nevertheless, there will he a much bigger proportion of fowl-feed this season. Little new season’s oats is offering, principally because of merchants being disinclined to talk business. . Algerians are weak, there being considerable local stocks of old season’s oats. Barley is worth 7s. to 7s. Id. at country stations. Though discoloured in many cases, the grain is firm and well ripened. There is no movement in grass seeds. There has been some inquiry ' from Auckland for potatoes for March delivery, and small business has been done at £5 a ton at country stations. The current quotation for main crop delivery is from .£4 to £4 4s. There is a better feeling in regard to potatoes than in the case of other products. Onions have eased in price, and are now worth £4 to £4 10s. a ton at country stations. NEW FREEZING WORKS OPENED By Telegraph. —Press Association. Gisborne, March 1.
