WAIRARAPA MEETING MIRAGE MAKES CONDITIONS DIFFICULT (B.v Tel&srranh—Special Correanondent.) dasterton, February 2t. The twenty-sixth annual meeting of the Wait ar ana. Rifle Association was commenced at the Papawai rance on Saturday. The meeting this year is exceptionally well patronised, there beinc over ZoV entries, including competitors from all parts of the Dominion. Besides five trophies for the best aggregates, prize money to the total of £llOO has been allotted to various matches. Though there was practically no breeze In the morning, the day was fine and hot. and there was a shifty mirage, which made close shooting during the first match -the Bidwill Match at 300 yards-very difficult. 11. Loveday (Hawera) was placed first, his score being 5,5, 5, 5. 6. 5. 5,5, 4. o —49. Wright (Mnrtinborouch). who came third with 5. 5. 6, 5. 5. 4. 5. 5. 4. 5-48. pub un a creditable performance as he was only a two. Shooting conditions in the Auckland Match at 500 yards were practically the same as at the preceding range, the mirage being still in cvuTenCK A troublesome gusty breeze also commenced to blow r shortly after shooting in .this match commmied. The winner. E. Ballinger (Petone) gained the only possible of 50. Marley (Opaki) and L. Vernell just missed their possibles, the former •coring 4 with his tenth shot after a run of s's. and the latter getting 4 with his second shot. Day (Nelson) scored his 48 as follows:—s. 5. 4. 5,4, 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. JD. <T. Gainey (Petone) only totalled 47. his first, fourth, and seventh shots being marked A and the rest s’s. The Wellington Match at 60(1 yards was not completed. At the commencement of this match the breeze had risen and become very erratic. Boon after the match had started the wind became more steady, and tie mirage laving disappeared, some, very fine sheeting was witnessed.
