Another daughter of the late Lord Plunket (sth baron), who died last year, is to be married,' the Hon. Laline Plunket, who is not yet twenty years of age. There are three sisters, the eldest of whom married Captain Tahu Rhodes, Grenadier Guards). The prospective bridegroom is Mr. C. S- Whidborne, M.8.E., eldest surviving son of the late Rev. George Perris Whidborne, of Hammerwood, East Grinstead. The Girls’ College swimming sports are to be held at Te Aro Baths this morning. Miss G. Ewen arrived from Sydney yesterday by the Manama. The nflitron and officer commanding at Trentham Military Hospital acknowledge with thanks the following gifts and outings:—Red Cross, daily papers, cake, sweetsfi flowers, and comforts; Messrs. Whitcombe and Tombs, illustrated papers and magazines; Salvation Army, fruit, cakes, and sweets; Citizens’ Gift Fund (per Mrs. Luke), cups and saucers for Red Cross Club; Mrs. Barton, pears; Y.M.C.A. -kinema pictures; Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Miss Adams, drives in cars; Salvation Orphanage children, concert; Mr. Johnston (per Mr. Mason), cream, vegetables, butter, and flowers. The death occurred at Greymouth last Saturday afternoon of Mrs. James Warnes, mother of Mr. B. C. Warnes, of Wellington. The deceased lady, who was 76 years of age, was' one of the pioneers of Westland, and had resided at GreymoutTi for fifty-five years. She leaves a grown-up family of seven daughters and two sons, with forty grandchildren and great-grandchihfren. A meeting of the committee of the Society for the Protection of 'Women and • Children, was held on Friday afternoon, Lady Stout presiding. There were also present: Mesdames A. R. Atkinson, JI. Kirkcaldie, J. R. Glasson, Glover, and Dr. Ada Paterson. A great number of cases were brought before the committee, and where possible help was given. Nurse Doris Christian, of Christchurch, has been appointed to <he staff of the hospital at Apia (Samoa) -■ nd leaves by the Navua. Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Otway and Miss Otwav. of Remuera, Auckland, arrived in Wellington last week, en route for England. Mrs. A. Elder is visiting Dannovlnte. On Saturday evening a very pleasant and informal dance, organised by Sirs. Pow and her committee, in aid of the returned soldiers’ surprise packet stall at the coming carnival in the Town Hall, was held in the Ponsonby Hall. The dance was only one of a Series of efforts that have been made for ihis'etall, and so excellent has been the- work done by Mrs. Pow and her committee that It was found necessary to allot them another stall. Saturday night’s dance was also very successful, and the evening much enjoyed. An excellent floor, good music, and the fact that the men could I wear flannels instead of evening dress ; if they wished, added to the pleasure and j informality' of the occasion. With the approach of winter, Miss Bori laee has.organised her customary' assemi bly dances, and on Saturday evening one | of these was held in the Goring Street i Hall, and was greatly enjoyed by every- ' one attending. The arrangements, as I usual, were excellent, and these dances j promise to be as popular as they were ; last winter when their season was greati ly extended by reason of the urgent requests which were received by' Miss Bor- ; la.se to do so. Miss Borlase was in •' charge of the arrangements for the even- ' ing, and was assisted by’ her committee, I consisting of the Misses Bridge, Brine•den, Burgess, Darling, Earle, Gill, Matthews, Mead, Messrs. W. R. Andrew, D. .Murdoch, and H. Rout. An executive meeting of the Women’s National Reserve, Residential Nursery’ i Branch, was held last week. Present: ' Mrs. Porter, Mrs. Boden, Mrs. Findlay, Mrs. Sleemau, Dr. Collins (in the chair), Mr. Shirtclifffly Mr. MTntosh, and Mr. Lewis, M'he matron’s report stated that since December. 6, 23-children had been admitted, all the mothers being in hospital or certified by a doctor as being entirely unfit to take care of the child-
ren. Most of them being most urgent and distressing eases, the mothers having been taken suddenly ill and having no one to leave in charge of their thildren. There were discharged 23 children in good health. In each ease the parents had expressed the gratitude they felt. present 17 children are resident, arid other beds booked up. Miss Sheppard, Mrs. Graff, and Mr. Graham have done arduous work in the garden'. It was stated that those who so kindly thought of the children at Christmas time by sending toys, fruit, etc., would have felt well repaid if they had seen the joy expressed. The treasurer (Mrs. Findlay) presented her report, mentioning the progress made by the secretary towards the special home purchase fund. Mrs. A. Levy, who has been on a visit to Rotorua and Auckland, has returned to Wellington, and has taken up residence at Bona Bay. Wedding at Brooklyn. The marriage was solemnised by the Rev Hudson at the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church last week of Miss Frances Hazel Cook, daughter of Mrs. and the late Mr. H. Cook, of Brooklyn, and formerly of Petone, to Mr. G. IV. Roberts, son of Mr. and Mm. T. Roberta, of .Wellington, and recently of Petone. The service was choral, the “M adding March” being played by Mr. J. Pollock, of Petone. ’ The bride, who was given away by her twin brother, Mr. T. Cook, wore accordeon-pleated crepe de chine and georgette, and a veil, which had been worn by the bridegroom’s mother, and carried a shower bouquet. Miss Marjorie Cook attended her sister as bridesmaid, wearing a frock of white georgette. The little Misses Cook and Roberts were t'he flower girls. Mr. D. Roberts acted as best man. A reception was subsequently held at the residence of the bride’s mother, after which Mr. and Mrs. Roberts left by motor for the ' north.
