SHIPPING DISPUTE
CHEAT LOSS IN WAGES * COMMITTEE TO DECIDE MANNING QUESTION By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright. (Rec. February 27, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, February 27. It io estimated that over .£1,200,000 has been lost in wages in consequence of the shipping strike. The settlement reached provides that no question of manning is to be raised regarding the ships not being put into commission immediately. The manning question will be decided by a manning committee equally representing the shipowners and tho seamen. This committee will be constituted by March 1 nt tho latest. Its decisions will be binding on both parties. A conference on suggested alterations of the present general .agreement as to wages and conditions will be held within a fortnight. The agreement is to continue in force until December 31 or until mutually determined. The recommissioning of ships will proceed as quickly as possible. Arrangements are'being made for the dispatch of the Maheno to Auckland on Monday afternoon. —Press Assn. GENERAL "STRIKE THREAT EMPLOYERS’ DENIAL OF LABOUR STATEMENT. Sydney, February 26. Tiie employers flatly deny the Labour etatement that manufacturers are desirous of a general strike, and that an agreement exists for putting oil , employees to cause unemployment. They claim that they have done, and are doing. everything in their power to prevent unemployment or disruption of pro. ducing power, and have loyally obeyed the Arbitration Court awards. They are prepared now to do anything reasonable to prevent an increase in unemployment. —Press Assn.
