MAGISTRATE’S COURT
POLICE PROCEEDINGS The charge sheet at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday was large. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., heard the cases. Daniel Higgins, a seaman on the Viking Star, who was before the Court earlier in the week on a charge of absenting himself from the vessel, and ordered to forfeit two days’ pay, was again before the Court on a, similar charge. He was convicted and sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, and ordered to be placed on board before the Wsscl sails. Mary Agnes M'Dowell was remanded to Wednesday on a charge, of stealing a gold ring valued at £4fl, the property of B. F. Kelly. Bail was allowed in one surety of .5100, or two sureties of £5O each.
K. H. Jensen, charged with assaulting H. C. Williams, so as to cause him actual bodily harm, was remanded to Wednesday and bail was allowed in one surety of £5O. For drunkenness, Samuel Costain was fined 10s., and W. R. Janes 20s. Thomas M'ElHgott, for being found in the Caledonian Hotel after closing 1 hours, was convicted and fined 40s.
William Ludlow, for whom Mr. J. Scott appeared, was charged with being the owner of a dog which' attacked a child on the public highway. The facts were that throe little girls were playing in the street, and a fight between the dog and another commenced. One of the girls went up to call her dog oft’ whenfc she was knocked over. -There was no evidence of the child having been attacked, and the information was coneequrtitly dismissed. t For failing to close their shops as pro. vided in the Shops and Offices Act. J. Eager and 11. L. Simpson were each fined 10s., and 7s. costs, and J. J. Annand and Sun Tai Wah were convicted and ordered to pay costs 7s. For neglecting to attend drill, Bernard C. Hyland was fined £5 and costs, James Middleton 20s. and costs, and Thomas B. Stevens 10s. and , 7s. costs. Frederick Harfiebl, assistant steward, of the s.s. Pakeha, for whom Mr. P. W. -Tagkson-appeared, proceeded against W. Deer, another, steward on the same vessel, who was represented by J. F. B. Stevenson, for allegedly assaulting him on tho ship after a dispute over linen. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate dismissed 'the information. P. Firth and William Hannifin were charged with selling liquor to a drunken man, and tho same two were charged with permiHing drunkenness in tho Wellington Hotel. Charles Lark, barman at the hotel, was charged with supplying liquor to a man already’ in a drunken state. Mr. J. O’Donovan appeared for Hannifin, and Lark, and Mr. A. Wyl’e for Firth. Tho facts were that Firth, who was the licensee of the hotel, sold his interest to Hannifin, but as Firth had not been three months in tho hotel Hannifin could not get a transfer. He arranged for a permit to act. as manager cf th'e hotel during Firth's absence, and it was while he was acting in this capacity’ that the alleged offence took place. Lark, the barman, said that a sailor who was drunk camo in with three others and witness put him out. The man came in a second find a third Hine, and was put out each time. The hotel stood (it the corner of two streets, and when put out of one door the man,came in by the door in the other street. The man bad entered rhe fourth time when tho police came in. Evidence in support of I Ark’s statement was given by two witnesses. The Mngistrutc said -that ho would make an inspection of the premises before giving his decision.
