LAWN TENNIS
NEW ASSOCIATION FORMED. A quarterly meeting of the council ot the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association was held last night. Mr. M. E. Denniston presided over a good attendance of members. In seconding the application of the Waikato Lawn Tennis Association for recognition, Mr. G. N. Goldie said that Hamilton was going to have 32 grass courts on the Domain. These courts were being formed now. Air. George Scarborough, who laid the Davis Cup court at Auckland, was engaged in laying tho system of pipe drains which would be necessary He added that 38 clubs were in the district, and of these five were affiliated to the Auckland Association. They had a total of about 1300 members.
Air. E. S. Wilson (Canterbury) and Air. Melody supported Mr. Goldie. Mr. Melody''said that Wanganui and Taranaki had. proved that two associations could flourish within a short distance of one another.
Air. B. Keesing did not agree with tha previous speakers. He was of opinion that the Waikato should come in as » sub-association, not -as a separate association. He thought that other associations had similar troubles to Auckland. Auckland had held successful tournaments in the Waikato district, but Hamilton had never worked' in well.
Air.' R. Gore (Canterbury) eaid he did not see what benefit Waikato would get as a separate association that it would not get as a sub-association. Would all the clubs in that district join tho Waikato Association? It was pi'actically cutting the Auckland territory into half. Several other members spoke, one stating that at present Hamilton had only four or five sand courts. He knew that a move was being made to obtain grass courts, but it would be several years before these were ready. Air. Henderson (Wellington) moved as an amendment that consideration of the application should be deferred until the, next quarter! f. r meeting, and that the officers of the proposed assoc’ation be requested to obtain the names of all clubs willing to join, the association. After the secretary had produced official information on. the subject, Air. Henderson asked leave to withdraw his amendment, which was granted. The motion was carried by 31 votes to 12.
It was decided by 27 votes to 12 to hold the 1921 New Zealand championships at Christchurch, under the auspices of the Canterbury Association. The Taranaki Association’s application for the tournament to be held at NW Plymouth was withdrawn, and the borough Association’s application for the tournament to be held at Blenheim was the only other one received. The following recommendations from the Alanagement Committee were adopted:—“That the council affirms tho principle of granting financial assistance to properly constituted! junior or schools* associations by subsidising .£1 for .£1 up to £5 a. year grants made to such, associations by the controlling provincial associations.”
“That, in the future, when visiting tennis teams play matches against provincial teams, the association that controls the matches must accept responsibility for the expenses of management and entertaining.”
