BUSINESS AT ANNUAL MEETING

. > The annual meeting of the Newspaper Proprietors' Association of New Zealand was continued yesterday morning, in the Chamber of Commerce. An invitation from the Moving Picture Exhibition of British Industries, Ltd., to the official opening of their exhibitions was received, and accepted with thanks.

An application by the Drapers* Federation to send a representative to address the meeting with reference to cables about falling prices, circulations, and advertising charges, was received ami considered. Owing to the crowded agenda, it was resolved that the federation be asked to pines Choir representations in writing, when they would be considered. Applications from newsprint representatives were also read, nnd it was decided that , they be asked to place their views in writing. Sir George Fenwick reported for the Paper Mills Committee at some length, rind addressed members on the advantages of having newsprint made in New Zealand, and quoted from reports of the Director of the Forestry Department on ■the timber areas in New Zealand, who had taken infinite trouble in the preparation nf the reports. He moved the adoption' of the report. Mr. H. Morton seconded the motion, and addressed the uionling. as did th-- chairman and others. The following officers were elected for the ensuing ■year: —President, Mr. C. Earle; management committee. ,Messrs. P. Selig. H. Horton, C. S. Smith. W. J. Blundell, J. Coombe, E. Abbey Jones, and F. Pirani; paper committee. Messrs. P. Selig, L. Blundell, Robert Bell, R. J. Gilmour, and F. Pirani; advertising committee, Messrs. A, D. Seabrook, W. Easton, G. C. Odlin, J. Coombe, and F. Pirani; labour a,nd awards committee, A. Sando, G. C. Codlin, A. G. Anderson, W. C. Weston, and F. Pirani. Sir George Fenwick spoke at great length on the valuable service rendered by Mr. Selig, and moved, “That the members of the. Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of New Zealand, at their final annual meeting, record their grateful appreciation of the valuable services rendered to them by Mr. Selig,.who has occupied the position of president for 13 years. M r - Selig had B iven his time in unstinted measure to the association's affairs, during that long period, find it. is largely due to his energy and care that the association has proved of very great value to its members.’ Mr. Coombs, in seconding the motion, expressed the appreciation of provincial proprietors for the help and counsel afforded them by Mr. Selig. He was followed by Mr. Henry Horton, Mr. C. Earle, and Mr. Pirani, who also eulogised the retiring chairman and his work. The motion was received enthusiastically. A hearty vote of thanks was also accorded the secretary (Mr. L. J. Berry) for his work. Representatives of the Board of Trace —Mr. M'Donald (president), Mr. Collins (secretary)—waited upon the association and discussed the newsprint question. 'Mr. Earle and Mr. »Selig outlined the ' position of the newspapers. Mr. M'Donald repliedMr. Pirani moved a vote of thanks to the. Board of Trade for their attendance. Air C Earle moved, 'Sir George I'enwick seconded, and it was unanimously carried:—“That this annual general meeting of members of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Few Zealand (Incorporated) desires to place on record its high appreciation of the hospitality and many courtesies accorded by the chairman of the Empire Preio Union (Viscount Burnham) in England and in Canada, to the chairman of our association (Mr. P- Selig), and other New Zealand delegates to the Empire Press Conference, and looks forward with pleasant anticipation to being afforded an opportunity to repay that hospitality in kind. In the evening ia deputation, consisting of Messrs. W. D. Stewart (Dalgen and Co.), J. T. Martin (Wrig'ht, Stephenson and Co.), A. AV, Jameson (New Zealand Jf’irmevs’- Co-operative Association), attended and addressed the conference on the financial and economic outiovk, with special reference to public and P rl ™ te expenditure and company taxation Ihe visitors were thanked for their interesting and informative addresses. .
