From Our Own Correspondent Palmerston North, February 21. The Manawatu sub-provincial executive of the Farmers' Union met at Levin on Saturday. Correspondence was read which had passed betweon the executive and ths Board of Trade on the question of the cost of boiled linseed oil at Wellington and at Palmerston. The Board of Trade had held an inquiry into the matter, and ■ did not consider that under the present circumstances the price of 15s. 9d. per gallon at Palmerston North was excessive, while oil was selling in Wellington at 9s. per gallon, and the latest quotation from Home was 3s. 9d. per gallon. A considerable discussion followed, in which several members expressed the opinion that the board was useless, and a motion that it should be abolished was tabled. This was eventually withdrawn in favour of the following amendment, which was carried:— "That the board is not doing effective work, and tlijit it should be reconstituted, with a fair proportion of farmers as members.” A reply to the request forwarded to the Minister of Public Works that a tyre tax should be instituted to assist in the upkeep of main roads was read, the effect being that the matter would be referred to Cabinet. It was resolved to urge the provincial executive to take up the matter. The reply from the dairy section of the Agricultural Department to a request for the institution of a .300 days’ test for registered' cows (to freshen . again within ° twelve months), in addition to the present 365 days’ C.O.R. test, was considered unsatisfactory, and it was decided to arrange for a deputation to lay the matter before the Minister of Agriculture. . In reply to n request to the Agricultural Department that all calf foods offered for sale should bo analysed 'for the feeding qualities for the benefit of those rearing calves was read to the effect that the matter would receive careful consideration. It was mentioned, that experiments in calf-rearing had been carried out at the Weraroa Development Farm last year, and it was sugthat farmers should visit the farm and sec the results of the various classes of fowling for themselves. It was eventually decided io bring the matter under the notice of the Minister of Agriculture. DUNEDIN WOOL SALE WATERSIDE HOLD-UP LEADS TO POSTPONEMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, February 21.
There was n full bench of buyers for the 19,000 odd bales catalogued for the second Dunedin wool sales this morning. Mr. Andrew Todd, chairman of the Moolbrokors’ Association, announced that owing to unavoidable circumstances the sale would be postponed till the evening. It is understood that this statement is explained by a common clause in wool sale conditions which allows a buyer to cancel his purchases if a strike commences or is in progress.
The Woolbrokers’ Association held a meeting in conjunction with wool buyers to-nfeht, and decided that no sale could be held this week, but that an attempt would be made to hold one on March . provided that shipping facilities weie available.
