NEWSPAPER PROPRIETORS
ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of New Zealand (Inc.) was opened in the Chamber of Commerce last evening, at 7.30 o’clock. Mr. P. Selig (Christchurch “Press”) president, was in the chair, and there were also present:— Messrs. J. Coombe ("Manawatu Standard"), A. M'Nicol, M.P. ("Dannevirke News”), W. C. Whitlock (“Tribune” Hastings), W. C. Weston (“Taranaki Herald"), W. Dinwiddle ("Hawke’s Bay Herald”), T. C. List ("Taranaki Daily News”), J. O’Brien ("Grey River Argus"), H. V. Duigan (Wanganui "Herald”), C. Ixiys and A. Seabrook (Auckland "Star”), W. T. Thomas (Taumarunui "Press”), W. C, Cargill (Morrinsville "Star”), C. Abbey Jones, ("Southland News”), R. J. Gilmour (“Southland Time-”), W. R. Kettle (Greymouth "Star”), E. G. Kerr (Timarti “Herald” and “North Otago Times"), A. E. Copping (Strafford “Post”), F. W. B. Greville (“New Zealand Dairyman”), C. f?. Smith “Evening Star,” Dunedin), Dr. Scholefield ("Wairarapa Age”), L. Blundell and W. J. Blundell ("Evening Post”), Sir George Fenwick ("Otago Daily Times”), C.' Earle and A. Sando (’The Dovhniox), George Worth (Wanganui “Chronicle”), A. A. Lucas (Nelson “Mail). G. C. Codlin ("New Zealand Herald”). A. Muir (G'sborne “Herald”), C. M’Donald (Pahintua “Herald”), J. M'Ara ("Mntoura Ensign”), R. B. Bell (Ashburton “Guardian”), C. East ("Northern Advocate,” Whangarei), F. Pirant (Feilding “Star”), A. A. Reese (Te Aroha. "News”), C. W. Walker (Hawera “Star”), R. Furness ("Marlborough Express”), and L. J. Berry (secretary). Tho president referred to the death of Mr. R. Gwynne, of the "Waikato Timos.” Hamilton, news of whose death had just been received. He was formerly a very regular member, and one who took a keen interest in its welfare. A vote of condolence with the relatives was pas-ed, all members standing. Mr. Selig delivered his annual address, and referred to the deaths since the last meeting of the Hon. Jones, M.L.C., Air. Henry Weston, of the "Taranaki Herald,” and Mr. IV. A. Parkinson, who was a proprietor of tho Hawera "Star.” He also referred to Nelson’s oldest paper, the "Colonist," which had succumbed to the exigencies of the times, and the loss in the councils of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of one of its proprietors, Mr. Percy Bond. He offered the congratulations of the association to tho Hon. G. J. Anderson, one of the proprietors of the Matanra "Ensign," on his elevation to the rank of Cabinet Minister. He .referred at great length to the newsprint situation, giving considerable information gathered during his recent travel®, with respect to the future. Other subjects dealt with were p. memorial to those newspaper men and printers who fell in the war; the paper-making industry; the Press Congress of the World; Labour and the awards; tho Imperial Press Conference: and the reconstruction of the association. He concluded his address ns follows:—"Having with this meeting obtained our majority, it. is fitting that, the new organisation should carry on the good work that has been done in the past. I lay down office after a term of 13 successive years in the position of you” president, and I hope I can fittingly apply tho words, 'Something done, something achieved.’” A unanimous vote of thanks was accorded to Air. Selig for his address, and for tho valuable work he had done during his lengthy term of office. The chairman here read a telegram from the Prime Minister, who regretted that owing to pressure of work ho could not attend the opening of the conference. New members were elected ns follow; The “Northern Advocate," the Pahiatua "Herald” Co., Ltd., and the "Grey River Argue” Co., Ltd. The meeting adjourned until 10 o'clock Ibis morning.
