BOOKMAKER AT TROTTING MEETING
FINE OF £25 IMPOSED.

AVilliam James Ryan, a carrier, pleaded guilfv in the Magistrate’s Court to a charge' of bookmaking at the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s mooting on hebruarv 12. The police gave evidence that accused was running a double chart on two or the events. Counsel said accused was making bets in small amounts with friends. He was not an habitual bookmaker. In view or recent cases elsewhere, had he elected to go before a jury he would probably be acquitted, but he had pleaded guilty to save trouble. ’ .The Alagistrate (Mr. S. E. M Carthy) said he would take into consideration the previous goon character of accused and his military service. He had pleaded guilty and had given an assurance that ne would mil again engage in the occupation of a bookmaker. His AA’orship imposed a tine of £25, in default three months’ imprisonment.
