UNITED STATES TARIFF

FATE OF BILL UNCERTAIN.

(Rec. February 16, 10.35 p.m.) Washington, February 15

The position of the tariff is 'becoming anomalous. The Senate passed amendments putting a duty of 8 cents per lb. <*n butter, 12 cents pgr dozen on eggs, and 23 per cent, ad valorem on cheese, but the Opjxisition Democrats still expect to defeat the measure when it conies to the vote. There is a rumour that twelve Democrats have agreed to join themselves to the Republicans in order to pass the Bill, but Senator Underwood declares that President Wilson will unquestionably veto the measure, even if it passes. The Republicans are now attempting to build up a sufficient majority to pass the Bill in the event of President Wilson applying the vote, but owing to failure to pass the closure any Senator can talk the measure to death. The session has hardly more than ten days before it must adjourn since die, so'that the fate of the measure is uncer-tain.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
