INTERESTS IN UREWERA COUNTRY
BIG CONSOLIDATED SCHEME.
By Telecranh.— Special Corresnoudent. Whakatane, February 16.
With reference to the 466,000 acres purchased by the State in the Urowera Country, a large assembly of Natives at Ruatoki to-morrow will represent to the touring Parliamentary,- party that the time has arrived when the Government should consolidate its purchases with certain defined blocks, and that the interests of non-sellers, who are scattered, should be consolidated at the same. time, and thus bring about a stock-tailing of interests, both Native and European, in these lands. Sir William. Herries, before giving up the portfolio of Native Affairs, expressed himself ns sympathetic with this proposal, and the only question to be raised is whether such a vast consolidation scheme could be carried out with promptitude. The Hon. A. I. Ngata will guarantee io the visitors that if "the proposal is adopted by the Government consolidation will be settled within twelve months.
