ASIATIC EGG PULP
MENACE TO POULTRY FARMERS. By Telegraph—Pres, Association. Christchurch, February 14. A deputation of returned soldiers who are now poultry-farmers waited on Mr. Massey in connection with, the Asiatic egg trade. The speakers said they were menaced by the trade in Chinese egg pulp, and if they went to the wall the Government would be left with the biggest farm settlement in New Zealand on its hands. The Prime Minister said he had no sympathy with the importation of egg pqlp, and he would see if it was possible to prohibit the pulp without legislation, but doubted it. He knew the temper of Parliament in the matter, and as soon as the prohibition could be imposed it would be. LONDON MARKETS HIGH COMMISSIONER’S MARKET REPORT. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated February 12, from the Higli Commissioner for New Zealand, London : — “Meat.—Home killed: Prices have declined owing to large supply of chilled beef. Average prices are—Beef, Ib. 5d.; mutton, Is. 9d.; lamb, 2s. Old. per lb. Chilled beef: Fores realising Bd., but hinds vary from 10}d. to Is. per lb. New Zealand beef demand reduced for this reason. New Zealand lamb and lightweight mutton in active demand at full prices. Report cun-ent that large quantity New Zealand lamb being reshipped to this country from America, and this is limiting c.i.f. business. Moderate quantity of Dutch pork on market in good demand a.f Is. 4d. per lb. “Butter.—lrish, new made, unsalted, creamery, selling at J£l7 10s. per cwt (3s. lid. per lb.); Irish, ex stores, .£l4 per cwt. (2s. 6d. per lb.). Price of Danish for this country last week was All 6s. per cwt. (2s. per lb.) f.0.b.. Government butter, no change in price—.£l4 18s Bd. per cwt. wholesale, and 3s. per lb. retail, but some retailers selling at 2s. lOd. and 2s. ltd. per lb. "Cheese—Market remains unchanged. Canadian is elow — £7 14s. to 18s. per ■cwt. (Is. 4Jd. to Is. 4Jd. per lb.), white, and £7 18s. to £8 per cwt. (approximately Is. sd. per lb.) coloured. New Zealand, £7 12s. to £7 16s. per cwt. (Is. 4RL to Is. 4Jd. per lb.), white, and £7 16s. to £8 per cwt. (Is. 4id. to Is. sd. per lb), coloured. . “Hemp.—Manila market continues dull, prices again lower. “>T” grade, Febru ary-April shipment sold early this week £4B 10s. per ton. December-January to February-April shipments now quoted £47 per ton. New Zealand market weak and inactive. Highpoints, spot, now quoted £5O, fair £4B per ton, with speculative sellers at £2 to £3 less for for ward shipments. "Wool.—At Thursday’s Government sales at Liverpool 15,521 bales Australian and 5219 bales New Zealand offered. Large attendance home trade, and with Continental and American support, oom petition was keen—7s per cent, offering was cleared, withdrawals being chiefly scoured and slips crossbreds and medium and low, greasy pieces. t Prices firm at lastr London sales’ rates for better quality merinos. Crossbreds easier, especially lower qualities. New Zealand greasy, 9}d. to Is. 2d. per lb. "Honey.—Market is dull and depressed. New Zealand, 40s. to 755. per cwt. (4£d. to Bd. per lb.) nominal.”

Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on their Palmerston North wool, skin and hide sale, held on February 4: —"We offered a large catalogue of all classes to a good bench of buyers, who competed keenly for everything, with the exception of medium and light cow hides. These showed a drop of Id. to 2d per lb. on last sale's rates. Sheepskins'sold at id. to Id. per lb. advance, while calfskins advanced Gd. to Bd. per lb , contrary to expectations. Wool sold very well, especially bag lots. Tallow was in very poor demand. We quote:— Bag wool: Crossbred fine, 7d. to Bd. ; crossbred medium, 4d. to crossbred coarse. 3id. to 4Jd.; crossbred rough and inferior, 2d. to 3Jd.; lambs, 4d. to Bid.; dead, 2jd. to 3?d.; pieces, 2}d.; crutchin as 2}d.; locks. Id. to ljd.
