ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL FUND

A PROGRESS REPORT. The Cathedral Committee of the Wellington Anglican Cathedral met on Monday and Tuesday last, when the Rev. C. F. Askew, vicar of St. Mark’s ana hon. organising secretary of the scheme, gave a report of his work in Englana in, connection with the military chapel. During the course of his remarks, he announced that the sum of about £5006 had been contributed by English friendsand that an organisation had been left behind, so that this amount ehoulu eventually be considerably increased. As showing how taxation, the high cost of living, and other adverse factors militated against large donations he said that between twenty and tairty thousand people were identified with, ana had contributed to, the scheme, amread a number of extracts from hun- ■ dreds of letters he had received, to give an idea of the condition of things in England and how impossible it was under the present circumstances for people to contribute as they would have liked to do. He paid a high tribute to Mr. John Walter the managing director of the “Times’,” to Sir Philip Gibbs, the famous war correspondent, and Dr. R. J. Campbell, the well-known divine, for then articles and practical sympathy and sup port, and also to General Sir Alexandei Godley, through whose instrumentality most of the trophies, which will form a priceless collection, were obtained. Almost every soldier nnd sailor of note who had any. connection with the New Zealanders, 'had sent a flag or othex trophy to hang or bo exhibited in th< beautiful military chapel. A motion that the Cathedral Committee recommend to Standing Committee that w start be made on some part o. the cathedral when the sum of .DoO.OOG is in 'hand, and owAjtiOnM'-.'or building are &irw<sra*olo. was unanimously carried. It was stated that over .£35,000 had been promised in various sums, _ extending over a period of years, and it was felthat the amounts outstanding would soon be redeemed, now that something definite- wag being arranged. . . The sum now in hand . being ovei JJ15.000 it was felt that only a little effort was needed to obtain the balance required to comply with the committee’s recommendation.
