COW CAUSES MANY DEATHS
200 CASES OF TYPHUS; 30 OF SMALLPOX.
Ono cow in a 'herd of 64 at Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire, is believed to have been the cause of 10 deaths from smallpox. 20 other cases of smallpox, 3 deaths from typhus, and a total of 2'JO .non-fatal cases of typhus and septic sore throat.
The smallpox cases occurred first, ten nf these having a fatal termination. Then typhus broke out in the town, and this was followed '.by numerous cases of seotic sore throat.
Suspicion fell on one particular cow, and bacteriological examination revealed the fact that organisms recovered from tho throats of the patients were identical with organisms recovered from the milk of this cow. The animal was removed from the herd, and the disease gradually subsided, but in all 200 ca>«i occurred, and three deaths appear to b* directly or indirectly attributable to infection from this source.
