A'Press Association message from Ashburton an Saturday stated that Mr. Joshua Tucker, aged 75, died at his residence at Allenton on Saturday. Born in Devonshire, he arrived in New Zealand in 1871 in tho Zcalandia, xomw ß to Ashburton in 1875, where he had been a prominent figure m public commercial life ever since. He leaves an adult family and six eons and two daughters. The Rev. F. H. Petrie, vicar of St Barnard’s Church, Roseneath preached his farewell sermon last night. Alter the service tho congregation gathered around to wish him God speed in his new sphere of labour, and to present him and Mrs. Petrie with tokens of regard. Mr. Petrie is leaving for Feildmg to fill tho charge of Archdeacon Inness-Jones, who ■becomes vicar of St. Barnard s. It is understood that Mr. J. R. Reed, K.C., of\Auckland, is to. be appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court.
"Mr B L. Hammond, of the legal division staff of the Public Trust Office has been appointed Registrar of the Arbitration Court, as successor to Mr. John H. Salmon, recently appointed a Magistrate. Mr Hammond was for several years a clerk of court; in the Justice Department.
Mr F Raphael, chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council, is at present on a visit to Wellington in connection with the arrangements for the forthcoming visit of the Australian cricketers.
On Saturday morning the Chief Jus•ticc (Sir Robert Stout) admitted Mr. F. H. Haigh as a solicitor upon the motion of Mr. P- J. O’Regan.
