AMATEUR ATHLETICS

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

If record entries, and tho presence of first-class athletic talent cotint for anything, the Wellington Provincial Amateur Athletic Championships, to J>e held at the Basin Reserve on Saturday next, should. be one of tlie most successful gatherings of its kind ever held ih the Dominion. The total number of entries for the fifteen championships is 177. The hundred yards, furlong, and a -quarter mile have drawn 17, 20, and 16 entries respectively. The half-mile and one and three miles, 14, 19, and 14. The tw?> hurdle championships will be contested by eight men, including Wilson, and the two- university cracks, Jackson and Aitken. * The four jumping championships have drawn an average of fourteen entries. Even such events as the hammer and shot and the walk should each, see half-a-dozen starters. The three handicap events have attracted very large . entries, that most spectacular of all track events, the 300yds., accounting for 33. The various evening meetings already held this season, and tho big meeting at the Basin Reserve on Hexing Day, have been a sufficient indication of the great revival in the sport locally, and the large number of championship entries from the country districts—particularly' the Wairarapu and Wanganui—prove that the reports received earlier in the season did not exaggerate the growth of the sport outside the city. The Wellington Amateur Athletic Club, which came out victorious last year, will in the face of the strong opposition be haj'd put to it to retain the M'Villy Shield. A guarantee of more than usually keen individual competition is tho fact that the Wellington team for'the New Zealand Championships, which' are ‘to be held at Auckland this year, will be selectf?d very largely on the form shown at this meeting. The following have been selected by tho Wellington Amateur Athletic Club to represent them in the Provincial Championships for the M'Villy Shield, which is at present held by the above club:—H. E. Wilson, H. Hayvice, H. Wilkins, C. M. Olsen, T. J. Kerr, F. Rose, J. M'Kenzie, H. E. Whyte, E. G. Sutherland, P. Thompson, P. Munro, J. M'Holm, J. Brown, A. Shields.
