Turrell has returned to Wellington from Christchurch, where she was the guest of Miss Helmore. Mrs. and Miss Fox, who arrived in New Zealand recently from England, have come to Wellington from Hawke's Bay to attend tho races, and are staying at the Midland Hotel. Mrs. and Miss Batley, of '‘Aloawhango,” Taihape, are leaving for a visit to England next week. A garden party was given at Government House, Auckland, on Thursday afternoon by ’Their Excellencies tb.e Gov-ernor-General and Viscountess Jellicoe. On Thursday evening a dance, which was greatly enjoyed, was given by Mrs. lan Duncan at her residence in Hobson Street. Among the guests were several of tho visitors who are at present in town for the races. xb London" correspondent writes that Miss Dulcie Mitchell (Christchurch) has every reason to be well satisfied with the result of her recital at the Aeolian Hall recently, when her powerful contralto voice, and her choice of songs gave much pleasure to the large audience present. Her voice is one of wide range and rich quality, and marked expression is a characteristic of her singing. Miss Mitchell had the valuable assistance of Mr. C- Phillips, one of the professors at the Royal Academy of Music, who, some years ago, was her teacher. Mr. Phillips has a splendid baritone voice, and his contributions were imemnsely enjoyed. The London, music critics are quite complimentary. Mr. and Mrs. H. Redmayne and Mr. and Mrs. Trevor Shannon (Feilding) are among those visiting Wellington for the races. Mrs. E. IV. Mitchell and Miss T. Mitthell, of Marton, left by the Wahine last evening for Christchurch, where they intend spending a few weeks. Miss Cars.toii, kite matron of the Waipukurau Hospital, is spending a short holiday in Christchurch, before taking up her work at the lepeh station on Quail Island. Mrs. W. M'Lean gave an afternoon tea for Mrs. J. Matthews (who is leaving for Patea). Mrs. Adnam Mountfort presented Mrs. Mathews with a Doulton sandwich dish, a gift from her many friends. Mrs. Alathews feelingly responded. Music and songs enlivened an enjoyable afternoon. Dr. and Mrs. Hardwicke-Smith hare returned to Wellington from a visit to Christchurch. Mrs. Innes-Jones and family, Upper Hutt, have gone to Paraparaumu. The wedding took place at St. Mark’s Church, Taihape, of Miss Madeline Madge) Smith, only, daughter of Mrs. and Mr. R. W. Smith, M.P., to Mr. G. ■White Batley, son of Mrs. E. and the late R. T. Batley, of Moanhango, Taihape. The Rev. W. F. Stent performed the marriage ceremony. Mr._ Henricks presided at the organ. The bride was in ivory and silver brocade, draped with silver lace, caught with clusters of rosebuds, the court train being lined with pink georgette; she also wore a veil and wreath, and carried a bouquet of pale •pink flowers. There were five bridesmaids, the Misses Airoa Batley, Edith Parkes, Dorothy James, Dora Snelling, and little Phyllis Ryan, all wearing shell pink georgette frocks, leghorn hats with pink roses, and long black streamers, and with bouquets to match. Air. A. P. Smith ('brother of the bride) was the best man, the groomsmen being Mr. L. B Smith, Mr. A. W T . Thomson, and Mr. if. Dalrymple. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion. The bridegrofehi’s present to the bride was a set of lovely furs, and to the bridesmaid# gold gipsy bangles, and to the best mart and groomsmen gold links. Air. and Mr*. Batley left for Auckland for a trip, the bride’s going-away dress being a grey mid henna costume with hat to match. A dance was held in the evemng at “Werandon,” the residence of the brides parents, a marquee on the lawn being beautifully decorated by the girl of the' bride, as also were the supper tables. Next Thursday evening there a devotional service held in the Y.W .U.A. clubroom in Herbert Street. Mrs. J. Coradine (Masterton) is visiting AVellington. Mrs. H. W..
