The Minister of Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coates) left for Picton last night. He is to proceed to Blenheim to-day, and to Tophouse, up the Wairau Valley, tomorrow. His plans for next week include a journey via Jolly’s Pass to Waiau and Culverden, then a visit to Kaikoura and a trip northward along the coast road as far as the Clarence River. He is due in Christchurch on Friday next. He is to visit public works in Canterbury, Otago, and Southland before returning to Wellington about February 20. Messrs. AV. E. .Lendley and H. J. Knight, the New Zealand delegates to the conference of \ex-Bqldier organisations of the Empire to be held in Cape Town, commencing on February 23, left Wellington by the Manuka on Thursday evening. They will join the Ceramic at Sydney on Wednesday. Mr. J. Craigie. M.P. for Timaru, is on a visit to Wellington.
Mr. L. Birks, Chief Government Electrical Engineer, is visiting the West Coast of the South Island in connection with electrical power schemes. Mr. R. Russell Pugh, assistant to the New Zealand manager, Vacuum Oil Co., Ltd., was a passenger by the Manuka for Sydney, where he will take up duty in the company's Sydney office. Mrs. Pugh accompanied her husband. Mr. J. F. B. Stevenson, of Wellington, solicitor, was yesterday admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court by His Honour Mr. Justice Hosking, upon the motion of Mr. C. H. Izard. Mr. Stevenson went to the front with the Main Body, and saw service on several fronts. He served with the Imperial and Indian armies, and was awarded the Military Cross in France.
Mr. Charles W. Garrard, B.A. , who has been appointed senior inspector of schools for tho Auckland education district, vice the late Mr. E. K. Mulgan, is a native of Nelson, whore he was born in 1868. Educated at the Boys’ High School, Christchurch, lie graduated at Canterbury College, where he was a pupil of Sir Ernest Rutherford. Mr. Garrard was for twelve months headmaster of the school at Kaiapoi, and then was headmaster at Papanui for nine years, while for the past fifteen years he has been.an inspector at Auckland. While Mr. Mulgan was in England Mr. Garrard acted as chief inspector, and again held that position since Mr. Mulgan’s death. He has been prominent on the sports fields, and is an ex-representative of Canterbury both in cricket and football. At. a meeting of the Auckland Education Board, Mr. E. C. Banks presiding, it was unanimously decided send a letter of congratulation to Mr. Garrard on his appointment. The chairman said Mr. Garrard was the right man for the job. a remark which ivas endorsed by all those present.
Air. J. O’Shea, city solicitor, is on a visit to Dunedin. Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice, v-ill, for health reasons, make his projected journey to England by the direct route. He will visit the United States on his return at the end of the sear. Mr. E. Page, S.M., who has Leon in Wellington, has returned lo Auckland, where will presfe’o over the sitting of the Nbrth Island Railway Appeal Board.

On leaving the employment of the Wellington Cits’ Council Tramways Department. Air. E. R. Cameron was the recipient of a handsome leather ir-nelnng bag, the gift of his fellow-employees of the night shift of the three tramway sheds. Air. Cameron, who has been in the City Council’s employ for the past nine years, is leaving AVellington to take up fruit farming in the Blenheim district.
Air. T. S. Ronaldeon has been appointed a member of the State Fire Insurance Board. Air. Oscar Blundell has received the appointment of probation officer for tho Borough of New Plymouth.
