NOTES AND COMMENTS By Glencoe. TRACK WORK AT TRENTHAM. Though a heavy hail storm passed over Wellington at 3 a.m. yesterday it did • not reach Trentham, and training operai tions wero carried out without hindrance ■ of any kind. A good deal of galloping : was done and the. work on the whole was interesting. ; Of the Cup candidates that galloped, : Eleus and Maioha shaped the best, and I among the sprinters Going Uj> made friends by the way she slipped over five I furlongs. > The outside of the course proper and ; the inner grass were available for work, ’ as was the tan track. The Reed Brothers, ‘ H. Gray, G. Y'oung, and B. Deeley were ■ much in evidence riding work. Warplane, whom the critics pronounce on the big side, was not asked to do much, and after work his trainer, G. Price, and R. J. Mason made a prolonged examination of one of his joints. Statuette, who is to be ridden by H. Gray, in the Telegraph Handicap, was not galloped, but this occasioned little comment, as A. Oliver was very easy on her at Ellerslie, but she won the Railway Handicap. Several of the two-year-olds were sent from the barrier on the course proper, and amongst those that pleased was the Blenheim-trained Ditchley, who, tliough a trifle wayward, seems to have a great burst of pace. Taiparu left half a mile behind on the course proper in 50sec.” The black filly is not a good beginner, but the extra furlong in the Nursery Handicap will assist her. Humbug easily beat his stable companion, Chrysostom, over half a mile, in 49sec. The straight six furlongs at Trentham will suit tho long-striding Absurd colt, and he is expected to showup in the Telegraph Handicap. The three-year-old Vespucci was given a working gallop over ten furlongs. He
was picked up over the last six furlongs by Adopted, and the latter portion of the journey was run in Imin. 16sec. Canyon accounted for Sweet Memory over half a mile on the tan, and Esperance was sent a mile on the same course. Eleus was sent with Tenterfield and Idle Talk over a round on the course proper, but Tenterfield was again in a sour mood and would not try. Eleus easily shook off Idle Talk and had a big advantage at the finish. Horses sold as yearlings from the Waikanae stud won over 17,000 sovs. last season. The successes during the Christmas week of Silver Link, Blackmail, BoPeep, Satisfaction, Killowen, Prince Martian, Sleepyhead, Strategy, Bonnie Briar, Flight Commander, etc., added over 3000 sovs. to this year’s total. Owners are reminded that acceptances for the Pahiatua Meeting close on Friday next at 9 p.m. The annual meeting of the Foxton Racing Club will be opened on Saturday and concluded on Monday. The eight Waikanae yearlings to be sold on Friday at 2.30 p.m. arrived in Wellington on Monday night, and can be inspected at Thorndon Quay at any time now. The most convenient times for inspection are between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and between 3.30 p.m. and 7 p.m The Railway Department notifies in our advertising columns that the railway platform at Lambton will be cleared after the departure of each race train. Passengers for the races should therefore travel by the first train leaving after they enter on platform. TROTTING NOTES. The Wellington Trotting Club advertises a very complete special train service for their races on Friday. Tho first race is timed to start at 11.30 and the club is determined to get all the events off sharp on advertised time. To effect this it has been laid down by tho stewards that the totalisator must close down absolutely on the advertised time. During recent years the club has set an excellent example in this respect, and the public should lend every assistance by making their investments early. Author Dillon has not been doing too well since his return from the West Coast, and his owner deemed it advisable (o withdraw him from his Welling-
ton engagement at attempt to lower, the Australasian grass mile record ot -min. Bsec., established by him last year. B. Jarden is coming up with Mako Mako to contest the Gold Cup and Electric Handicap. . A. Fleming’s stable will be represented by Havseed in the Cup and Electric Handicap. , ~ The Hutt Park Trial Handicap should be an especially good race this year, as a number of the younger brigade appear among the acceptors. It will be remembered by followers of the sport that the great American-bred mare. Inx 1 oin jcr, won her first race in this event. he race is sot down as a 4min. class, but tho actual times recoined during recent vears have been:—Yim Kim, 3min. 42»sec.; Hickorywood. Imin. 44.15ee.; Doreen Dillon. IGMec.; and Tnx Pointer, 3min. 53see. It will be seen from this that the winner has to go a solid gait to “get there.” Lady IxiganberrV, Logan Queen, and Crusader are all credited with being very fast. Logan Queen has been penalised 4sec. in the Trial Handicap for her win at Cheviot on Saturday. Ronioroa, with 3see. in the Borough Handicap, is a solid sort of five-year-old, trained by H. Barraclough. He won a maiden race at Maimate Plains last year. T. Fox’s Trotting Derby candidate Carbinca, an evenly shaped three-year-old filly by El Carbine—Gardenia, will be given a run in tho Presidents Handicap, and being on tho limit has every chaJico to go steadily throughout. She trotted well at Auckland, but in the big fields left her feet repeatedly.
