VIRTUAL LEADER ARRESTED CAPTURED WITH FIVE OTHER SUSPECTS IN CONNECTION WITH WANDSWORTH ARSON OUTRAGE By Telegraph—press Association-Copyright. (Rec. January 18, 7.30 p.m.) London, January 17. One of six men arrested in connection with the Wandsworth arson outrage is believed to be the virtual leader of the Sinn Fein terrorist gang in London. The arrests were effected dramatically during the early hours of the morning at two places in South-west London. The police possess papers which they allege show that the men are associated with the movement. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [A carefully-planned attempt to set fire to the "Vacuum Oil Company’s depot at Wandsworth, a suburb of London, in which were 60,000 ban-els, containing 2,500,000 gallons of oil, was frustrated by three constables last Friday night. Three men were seen loistering at midnightin tho vicinity of the depot. When challenged they fired several shots with revolvers, 'but did not injure the police. A dozen other men had scaled the wall of the depot by means of a rope-ladder. These ran out on hearing the shots. The police pursued them, but all escaped except Wilfred Kenny, a clerk, who was charged with attempted murder and arson. The police found in the depot a lar-’C quantity of cotton waste ready for setting alight. Oil was also leaking from a dozen barrels in which holes had been pierced.] STRANGE EPISODE AT DUNDALK JEWELLER ROBBED BY MEN WITH BOGUS WARRANT. (Rec. January 18, 7.30 p.m.) London, January 17. There was an extraordinary episode at Dundalk, Hakenjos, a jeweller, being robbed of AlOO worth of jewels. He was awakened at midnight by six armed men, who said they had been sent by Dublin Castle to search his house and business premises for arms. Hakenjos, not ing their bona fides, showed the men over the house. The leader then said that Hakenjos must accompany them to his shop. Here Hakenjos opened the safe. The leader congratulated him on no arms being discovered, but said he u ould inspect the basement while the jewels were being replaced. On returning the men apologised profusely and left Hakenjos, who only discovered, this morning that he had been ro'bbed of every valuable by the men, who were acting on a bogus warrant.—Aus.-N.Z. MESSAGE FROM DE VALERA PLEA FOR UNITY TO MEET “THREAT TO OUR EXISTENCE.” London, January 17. Do Valera, writing to the Lord Mayor of Dublin, in support of the proposal to form an Irish White Cross Society, to relieve the suffering in the reprisals areas, conipares Ireland’s present situation to the time when conscription threatened her, and says*. “M e must act as a united, disciplined people to meet tho present threat to our existence. As Mr. Esmonde continues firm in his determination not to subscrtlm to the oath of allegiance, he is now ‘ marooned and guarded by Customs officials aboaid the Makura, which has been placed out of commission down the harbour. So far. no steps have been taken to test the position legally, and there are at present no indications that he intends to leave Australia by an outgoing steamer, which he has the option of doing.—Press Assn. Poynton, Federal Minister of Home and Territories, has announced that he has further considered the case of Esmonde,-and has decided, in view of information he has just obtained, to refuse to permit him to land m Australia, even if he took the oath of allegiance. —Press Assn.
