AMERICAN COAL
SUPPLANTING BRITISH ON FOREIGN MARKETS
As showing the extent to which the United States ie supplanting Great Britain in the supply of coal to foreign markets, an Ehglish correspondent at Washington quotes a return issued by the American Department of Commerce for September. This shows that American reports of bituminous coal (for tho month) were 4,011,000 tons, as compared with 1,475,000 from Great Britain. Exports to Canada alone from the United States were greater than British exports
to all countries. Hitherto France has been the leading market for British coal, but it was anticipated that the October returns would show the United States- to hold the lead, and the same thing was expected of Italy, formerly England’s second best customer. ■ To Scandinavia and Holland there wont in September 6J7.000 tons from the United States and only 179,000 tons from Great Britain, while the British coal trade lo South America is approaching vanishing point.
