FATHER KILLS HIS SON THEN ATTEMPTS SUICIDE By T»le«r«.oh—Pre«s A»iociation. Dargaville, January 17. A murder and attempted suicide occurred at Alarohemo, near Alaungaturoto, yesterday morning at 8 o’clock, when a father murdered his son, and then attempted suicide. It appears that the son, AVilliam Rawlir. Needham, aged eighteen, was busy separating cream, when an altercation took place with the father, Thomas Needham, aged sixty-five. The father, it is stated, picked up a broom, knocked the son down, and belaboured him with tho broom till he was killed. The body was frightfully knocked about. AVhen the father realised his act. he cut his own throat with a knife. This being ineffectual, he secured a rope to hang himself, but was too weak to carry his intention into effect.
Constable Boag was promptly on the scene, and had Needham, sonr., removed to tho Paparoa Hospital. The wound is not likely to prove fatal. A preliminary inquest will be held at Alaungaturoto to-day.
