NOTES AND COMMENTS By Gmsxcoß. The heavy rain which fell on Saturday gave the Trcntham tracks a muchneeded soaking, and was just what was wanted. The going should now be perfect for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s Summer Meeting on Thursday. So far there has not been much fast work at Trentham, but by to-morrow tho majority of tho hotses will be here, and there should be an interesting morning's work. Yesterday H. Cutts received an addition to the Chokebore team in the shape of Royal Stag and Scrimmage. The latter is a two-year-old filly by Antagonist from Mad Whirl, and is highly thought of. The Blenheim trainer P. Reardon arrived on Saturday night with a couple of horses. H e first day at Trentham, and then go on to Foxton. t C. Emerson was riding at Cheviot on Saturday,' and is coming north for the Wellington meeting. The well-known Australian hoi-seman, Gregory Ross, died last month in' Melbourne. The biggest success he scored during his riding career before the war was in the Sydney Cup Dyed Garments. Ross' served in the Australian Light Horse during the campaign in Palestine. Lightning, the two-year-old full-brother to Gloaming,- has been put into work again in Sydney by T. F. Scully, lhe colt was bought by Mr. A. Hordern as a yearling for 1200 guineas, but so far his sporting owner has not got a start out of him, much less a return for the high price paid for him. Satisfactory acceptances have been received for the Wellington Trotting Club's annual meeting, which takes place on Friday next. Ten have been paid up for in the Trotting Gold Cup, and as the limit is now contracted to 3sec., a rare contest may be anticipated. A feature of the meeting will be Author Dillon’s effort to lower the Australasian mile grass record. Should the track, bo in good order there is considered to every prospect of the champion being successful in his mission. At Trentham on-Saturday Canyon and Sweet Memory were associated over Half a mile, and they put up the astest gallop of the morning, getting to the end of tho journey in 49sec.' The Cup candidate Vespucci galiopcd nine furlongs. He was picked up over the last six furlongs by Rossini, and he beat him home. The last six furlongs rook Imin. I'Jsec. Rossini is making a lost of noise when galloping. -Dusky Eve arrived on Saturday night in charge cf his trainer, I. Clarke. The Signor gelding looks wonderfully well So far no rider has been engaged to ride Mr. H. M. Campbell’s horse. The Hastings trainers, R. Gooseman with three horses, S. Waddell with live, V. Colello with two, and W. Donovan with a like number, are due at Trentham to-night. F. Davis is - bringing iuo horses from Woodville, and. T- Lloyd oiie. Esperance has freshened up a great deal since the New Year, and looks ve-rv well At Trentham on Saturday morning she ran ten furlongs with La Paloma. the last mile taking Imin. 46sec. Had the rain not come this week R. J. Mason would not have started Gloaming at the Wellington meeting. rhe 'bay gelding is going on the right way, but his trainer would not rr.ee him on the. hard tracks. A Press Association message from Dargaville states that the Northern Wairoa races, which were postponed on Saturday, will be held to-morrow The Kawakawa races will lie held 10-dar. the onginal date.
