THE AMERICA-AUSTRALIA MATCH

PATTERSON DEFEATS JOHNSON By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright. (Rec. January 16, 5.5 p.m.) Melbourne, January 16The weather was beautiful, and the court was in good order yesterday for the teams match between America and Australia. The attendance was a record. In the singles Tilden beat Brookes, 6—l, G—4. Brookes’s serving and plac-’ ing were superb on the side and base lines. Tilden’s receiving and covering of the court was brilliant. Long backhand drives formed a feature of both players’ work. Tilden gave a clever exhibition of skimming the net. Tilden opened the second set with a deadly volley and service, Brookes playing well to the side lines. There was a, great rally with the play on the side and half-court lines. Tilden was scoring with his service strokes, and Brookes was receiving and placing splendidly. Tilden won the ninth and tenth games dashingly. Patterson beat Johnston, 6—2, 4 —6, 6—4. Johnston won the service, and began scoring, placing well on the baseline. Patterson was returning beautifully, and showing great improvement on yesterday’s display, scoring repeatedly by smashing lobs delivered by Johnston. The final set was full o&long drives. ; In the doubles Washburn and Joh*ston beat O’Hara Wood and Hawkes, 5—7, 6—3, 4—6, 6—2, 6—3. An element) of humour was introduced by Washburn and Johnston competing for strike from lobs. There was no serious play until the last set. America winning the first, second, and fourth, and Victoria the fifth and sixth games, making the games three all. America followed with the next three, and won the set. —Press Assn
