WEST AUSTRALIAN STRIKE
SETTLED BY ARCHBISHOP’S INTERVENTION DIFFERENCE REFERRED TO ARBITRATION COURT By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright. Perth, January 15. The railwaymen’s strike in West Australia has been settled by the intervention of Archbishop Riley, and the difference has been referred to the Arbitration Court. There is to be no victimisation. —Press Assn. [Dr. Colonel Riley has been in Perth since 1594, when he became Bishop of the diocese, and was made Archbishop in 1914. Since that year he has been Chaplain-General to the Commonwealth Military Forces. His diocese, extending over the middle western part of West Australia, covers 84,000 square miles.j
SERVICES BEING RESUMED TERMS OF SETTLEMENT. (Rec. January 16, 5.5 p.m.)
Perth, January 16. The' railway and tram men are back at work. The services are gradually 'being resumed, and. business, which, has been largely at a standstill since the strike began, is again normal. The terms of the settlement are that one side concedes the recognition of the eight-hour principle, higher wages for night work, all strikers to be reinstated, and time lost not to be counted as a break in service. The other side agrees to the submission of all points in dispute to the Arbitration Court.—Press Assn.
THE STEWARDS’ DISPUTE federal premier refuses TO INTERVENE. Melbourne, January 15. A deputation from the • Trades Hall and the transport workers asked Mr. Hughes to convene a conference of owners and stewards to negotiate for the resumption of work. Mr Hughes declined to intervene, pointing out that the men left the ships and flouted the provisions of the Industrial Peace. Act The men should return to work under the conditions of the award.—Press Assn
