BOWLING
DOMINION TOURNAMENT POST-SECTION PLAY ADVANCES GETTING DOWN TO THE FINALS After a change of wind and an hour’s welcome rain in the early morning, the weather cleared up bright and warm yesterday, and the heart of the bowler was glad. The big rink contest is now well on the way to completion. As there were a great many bowlers not concerned in the finals of the rink tournament, an extra "Come Again” tourney/was initiated by the committee yesterday morning, and elicited thirty-four entries. They were allotted the Thorndon, Victoria, and Kelburn greens, where t'hey made a start at 11 a.in. In this tourney the games were played yesterday, and there will bo three games to-day, which will fill out the week comfortably for the visiting bowlers The first games played yesterday were those between Gray (Kelburn) and Land (Hastings), and .Ardell (Hataitai) and Haldane (Nelson) in the play-off (for section winner) in Section G. These games attracted a large and intensely interested “bank.”' Every bowl was followed with the keenest interest, and any good shot earned a volley of applause. THE G SECTION PLAY-OFF The results .of the play-off in Section G were: — Kelburn: Caitghley, Compton, M'Coll, Gray (s.), 24; Hastings: Horton, Parkinson, White, Land (s.), 15. In .this game, Gray went away with the lead, and by steady play retained it throughout. 'Half-way through dhe Hastings rink alinosT drew level, but Kelburn got away again. Excitement increased when on the twentieth head the score was: Gray, 21; Land, 15. MBien the skips went.' down Land lay five shots, comfortably disposed. Gray, with his first bowl, drew to save, and failed to get there. Land put in another "measure.” Then Gray drew again (when everyone anticipated that he would drive), and, amidst enthusiasm, trailed the jack a couple of feet, and lay That was “Land's end.” Nelson: Haldane, Robertson, Best, Haldane (s.), 8; Hataitai: Jeffrey, Ramsay, Feilding, Ardell (s.), 22. This game was a runaway win for the Hataitai rink. At22 8, Haldane, on the nineteenth head, threw up the sponge, his position being beyond recovery. game against Bell (Hamilton) at Ha taitai yesterday afternoon. There was a rather embarrassing spasmodic cross-wind blowing from the west, which held the howls up on the one hand, and Spiller did not seem to judge its influence as well as Bell until towards the end of the game, which was made a most interesting one. One marvellous shot was recorded. Spiller’s No. 2 was lying about four inches away. Spiller did not alter the head, but Bell, with his last bowl, played so accurately that he trailed the jack back a few inches until both his bowls and that of Spiller’s No. 2 .lay totiching the jack—a live head, but “no score.” Spiller’s play improved as the game advanced and he overtook his roan on the twentieth head, when he was 22— 20 in the lead. On the final head Bell was lying three, but Spiller had a yard to draw a shot in—just as he was taking off, his foot slipped, and the bowl went wide. It was real hard luck.
Many bowlers are apt to blame a green when it is the weather at fault. It is the fluctuating strength of the wind that accounts for the eccentric behaviour of the bowls. The centre rinks at Hataitai are among tho truest in Wellington, yet one heard players complaining of the green. They w'bre, of course, on the losing side. The game between Maxwell, Walker (Ponsonby) and Gray (Kelburn) attracted a big bank at Newtown yesterday afternoon. Gray played his usual solid, careful game, but these qualities which permeated the Kelburn rink hardly compensated for "Walker’s brilliance in strength. His "picking out” was very attractive, and he builds his head with consummate skill and foresight. Smart (West End, New Plymouth) was responsible for some beautiful draws in his game with M'Whannel on the Wellington green. M'Whannel was "cannie,” but the New Plymouth man was drawing to inches in a manner that evoked' applause. It was a good game. Graham (Remuera) effected) a bit of a surprise by defeating Woolf (Christchurch) after a rather extraordinary game. On the twelfth head the scores were: Graham 20, Woolf 7. Then for eight heads Graham failed to score, but so low was Woolf’s scoring that in the eight heads he only made eight points, which left him five points in the rear. Graham subsequently won by 9 points. The redoubtable "Jimmie” Brackenridge (Newtown) exactly doubled his opponent’s score in the game with Bolton (Victoria). Needham has been skipping Ramsay’s (Palmerston North) rink right through the tournament. Ho had another win yesterday afternoon, when he won by two points after a keen game with Ardell (Hataitai). Norrie Bell (an old Wellington Club pfayer), skip of the only Hamilton rink, is playing as well as ever. His success, however, is duo to the flue combination he has got together. His No. 3 (Varney) is . just as good as they are made on a draw or firm shot. It was rather unfortunate (for the Wellington Club that Hill and Jackman should have been drawn to play against one another in the first nouniT of postsection play yesterday afternoon. As it happens Jackman inflicted on his clubmate the most severe defeat of the day, viz., 23—6.
Tho game between Ixxndon (Wanganui) and Potter (Wellington) yesterday afternoon w'as a fine contest, only a point dividing the scores at tho end. Bremner (Invercargill) gave Sievwright (Wellington) a sound drubbing' on the picturesque Eastbourne green. Bremner is numbered among the favourites by those who have done the round of the greens. \ Of all tho creens (sixteen) the most popular greens with the players are theWellington (lower) and Eastbourne. Many of the visiting bowlers declare the Eastbourne green to be the most sheltered and picturesque in New Zealand. Two "eights” were scored within five minutes in different games on the one green ou Thursday. In all, three “eights” were scored in different games on Thursday.-. Maxwell Walker and his Ponsonby rink are fond of tournament playing. Before participating in the "Wellington tournament, he took part in the Wanganui tournament, and next month he will play in the second tournament at Rotorua. Walker registered his ninth successive win. yesterday afternoon when he defeated Tom Gray (Kelburn). So successful have the bonding tournaments at Rotorua been that two are to be held this season, one commencing on February 7 and the second on February 21. Sufficient entries have already been received for the first tournament. “ COME-AGAIN” TOURNEY FIRST ROUNb. x SECTION A (THORNDQN GREEN).
