SOLICITOR FINED £20
FAILING TO SEND INCOME TAX RETURNS. Frederick James Hammond, solicitor, of Auckland, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., with having failed to send in his income tax returns. Air. J. M. Tudhope, of the Crown Law Office, appeared for the Commissioner of Taxes. There was no appearance of the defendant. Mr. Tudhope stated that the defendant had not sent in returns for three years and had not paid any income tax during the period. Counsel was instructed by the Commissioner to press for a substantial penalty. The case was to have been heard at Auckland, but at the request of defendant it was transferred to Wellington. Air. Tudhope intimated that it was the intention of the Commissioner of Taxes to proceed against all similar offenders. , There were in all three charges against Hammond, who was fined -£26 on the first, and .£2 on each of the others, together with costs and expenses totalling 4’B 4s. 6d. / _______
