NBWB AND NOTE®

AUCTION SALES FORTHCOMING FIXTURES. TO-DAY. , 167 Lambton Quay, Wellington, 10.30 a.m.— Salo of horse, harness and express (E. Johnston and Co.). TO-MORROW. Masterton, 2 p.m—Land igle (Dalgety and Co.). MONDAY. Ye Horo 'Yards. IT hodh.-Stock sale. HOROWHENUA SHOW A REC©RB~ATfENDANCE judging in hokse classes. (From Our Own Correspondent.) L«vin, January 13. The fiftieth annual show of the Horowhenua A. and P. Association was continued to-day in perfect weather, and the attendance was a record. The public are well catered for on the amusement side, for the ring events are both numerous and interesting, and are well contested. Horowhenua iis the only show between Palmerston North and Wellington, and it is considered that there should be double the entries of stock than there are at present. It ts felt that a better railway service would assist the show, for the attendance at present is purely local. „ , , ~ To-day, judging was confined to the horse classes. The draught section was a particularly weak one, considering the amount of land being turned over in the district for which good plough horses are in request. The general utility horses were, on the whole, useful sorts, and fairly active, but nearly all th© animals shown as artillery horses were unsuitable for military work. The light horses, on the whole, were disappointing, more especially the harness sorts, motor-cars nvi-. dently putting these out of commission. There were fair entries of hacks, but the classes -were very mixed. The cobs were a useful lot, and the ponies, as usual, were a very mixed class, lhe ■ ring events were concluded, and the various events were watched with great interest. The prize for the champion hack and champion Indy's hack fell to Miss J • Perry’s (Masterton) Mandalay, which has quite a list of successes this season. The parade was well carried out, but it was the cause of general remark that the stock, especially of dairy cattle, was not worthy of such a fine district. The ladies’ driving competition was won by Mrs. N. Kirkcaldie, with Miss Broadbell second, and Miss J. Horn third. The prize for the bes- turnout fell to Mrs. Kirkcaldie, with Mr. P. J. Aplin second.
