After racing at Stratford the e l-bred Maropa, a full-sister to Cherubini, ~ sold to a patron of R. Johnson s £ E. Davis is treating Aureate, the tu 11 sister to Desert Gold, to a spell- • looks as if she will improve with age, and later on in the season, or as three-year-old, show out to good tage. Aureate is held under lease bj Davis from her breeder, Mr- 1Lowry up to July 31 next, hut as there is little chance of her owner being bach, in the Dominion by that date the lease of the filly will probably be renewed. Both Marshal Neil and Diamond Nap went wrong during the running of the hurdle races on the second day ot the Stratford gathering. The latter has run with very bad luck this season, having filled second place on several occasions. Some months ago Statuette. Parisian Diamond, and a couple of othpr thoroughbreds running in the same interests, were under offer to a certain home-owner
at j-snofl the lot, but the offer was turned down. As Statuette and Parisian Diamond won about .£2OOO between them during the holidays, the team was not dear at the figure quoted. The Pahiatua Racing Club has received record entries for its meeting to bo held on January 29. all the events promising big fields. The clubs system ot apportioning the stakes so as to gne second and third horses a fair share ct the money is doubtless responsible for the attention which the meeting is receiving from owners and trainers. , Nominations for the AVanganui J.C Cup Meeting close on January 2b. lb Cun this year will be worth Al6OO m cash and a cup valued at 41100. presented by Mr. G. F. Moore. Eleus, Silver Peak, and Roseday, members of Mr. AV. Stone’s team, are expected to arrive here on Saturday morning. So far it is not known who will have the mount on the first-named in the Wellington Cup. « ■ i The death was reported from Brisbane last week of Fred Yarr. at one time a well-known light-weight in New Zealand. Mort of his riding was done in he South Island, and among his successes were included the Oamaru Cup on Lapland, Dunedin Cup on Oiyoi. C.J.U Jockel’ Club Handicap on Red Gauntlet, .and the D t .J.C. Forbury Handicap on Czar Kolohol. Commenting on Poitrels Melbourne Cup victory, an English writer says:— “St. Alwyne, the sire of Poitrel, raced m England with little success about 20 years ago for Mr. AA T . Raphael, and the horse was disposed of to Mr. J. Brown, for 55gns., after costing 700gns as a yearling. St. Alwyne was dispatched to Australia, where he has sired many mnvers. 16 years ago. The steeplechaser Slowcoach figured among the starters for the Ellerslie Handicap. run on New Year’s Day, but he was never sighted near the front. The Hon. E. W. Alison must, however,-have some hopes of the erratic bay winning a flat race, as the Australian-bred gelding has been accorded nominations in that class at Takapuna.
Mr. AV. G. Stead’s champion two-year-old Mermin is unbeaten, and has won seven races on end. Anyone investing a pound on the Absurd colt each start would now lie showing a prefit of 412 18s. 6d. Even Desert Gold’s followers could not beat this. Seemingly the backing of favourites is not a payable proposition.
