LADY TENNIS CHAMPION

RECEPTION TO MISS CURTIS. At Petone last night a public reception was accorded Miss Nancy E. Curtis in recognition of the success she achieved in winning the New Zealand ladies champion singles at the Dominion championship tournament at Auckland last week. Miss Curtis, with Dr. Alison, also won the combined doubles championship. On arrival of the 7.50 p.m. train from Wellington Miss Curtis was welcomed by (ho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) and Mayoress, and escorted to a waiting motor-car. A large crowd had gathered round the approach to the station, and Miss Curtis was greeted with loud cheers. Headed by the local band, a procession was formed up, and marched to the Municipal Chambers, where an even larger crowd was waiting. Amid cheering, Miss Curtis entered the building and later, in company with the Mayor and Mayoress, town clerk, and members of the Petone Tennis Club, made her appearance on the balcony. Miss Curtis was made the recipient of several beautiful bouquets, included among which was one of roses, carnations, and maidenhair fern, affixed with the club’s colours -orange and royal blue—from .the Petone Tennis Club. , . . . ~-u The Mayor, in apologising for the ansence of the member for the district (Mr. T M. Wilford), said he had received a telemam from him in which the champion lady tennis player of the Dominion was wished every prosperity in her future life. "We have a big reputation fol producing champions in all athtettc sports,” remarked Mr. M’Ewan. but rarely such a Dominion champion, one who has competed against the best pl. in New Zealand. That alone make the performance unique. . • • J teel sure from the evidence submitted to me that there is good ground to J]®' 1 ®?- that were Miss Curtis to go and participate in the competitions there she would put up quite as good a recoid as that which she established at Auckland last week.”_ (Applause.) Cneers were again accorded the cham H. A. Parkinson, of the I’etonc Tennis Club, responded on behalf of MiSj Curtis, who was afterwards entertained at supper by members of the tennis Club Mid friend*.
