WAIRARAPA NOTES
Owing to a number of grass fires in the district, the weather in the Wairarapa during the past days has been exceptionally warm and sultry. lhe haze occasioned by the smoke has completely obscured the hills on either side of Masterton.. . The erection of another stopbanK is the only important operation to be completed before the new Waingawa Bridge will be opened for traffic. It is pated that the bridge, winch cost <£l-,joo, will be ready within a month. _ The Wairarapa Amateur Athletic Club has received information that H. h. Wilson, the Australasian champion hurdler, will compete in the 120 yards hurdles handicap at the annual sports, to be held on the Masterton Park oval on Anniversary Day. A petition signed by 26 ’ratepayers praying that the traffic restrictions on the Waimata-Masterton Road should not be lifted, was presented to the Masterton County Council on Tuesday. Councillor Moore, in supporting the petition, stated that the metal available for the road was unsatisfactory, and it was too expensive to cart metal from the Ruaiwihunga River His riding was already very heavily rated without traffic restrictions. Another winter would cut up the road beyond repair. He asked that the amending by-laws should not apply to the }y a1 ’ niata-Mastcrton Bond. After considerable discussion, a motion by Councilloi Armstrong, that traffic restrictions be removed from all roads within the county, wae carried.
