'l'ho death occurred at Petfone an Wednesday of Mrs, Joseph Ryan, daughter of the lute Mr. AV. H., Brewer, the first custodian of Newtown Park. Born in Wellington in 1860, tho jato Mrs. Kvan went to FeUanc forty veal's ago, sinco which time she had been one of the town's most prominent and highly respected residents. Death was due to an ailment from which tho deceased lady had been suffering for the pasO nine months. 'She is survived by a husband and grown-up family, the daughters of which are: Mrs. Chesterman, Mrs. B. \Vhitley, • Mrs. A. Phare, nnd Mrs. J. Childs, all of whom are resident in Petone. The sons arc Messrs. Joe and Frank Ryan, of Petone, nnd John Ryan, of Day's Bay. The youngest son AVilliain was killed-in action in 1011.

'A concert party, including the Misses E Itell. P. Massey, Messrs. Eraser Thomson, It. Meatcs, H. Phipps, V, Goudie, W Crowes, L. Inch, P. Campbell, \\. Brown, and it. T. Dixon, journeyed to Trentliam Military Hospital.on Christmas Night, and gave a delightful concert in tho Red Cross Club, and also visited the various wards. By means of a balanced syllabus these subjecls, could go nearer than any. other in teaching how the people of'a nation can live together. "When this point of view was applied, to modern problems these subjects could he made the most fruitful in the school. Presented in the right way through a right syllabus they could emphasise the importance of mass action* as well as the importaneo of' right leadership; they could show the fallacy of oveiemphasising tho economic interpretation and minimising the. force of powerful ideals. A largo gathering of residents of leathcrston and surrounding districts assembled at the farewell was organised for Mr. George lenw'ck, manager of the Bank of Isw Zealand, and Mrs. Feuwick, on A\ ednosday evening. Miss Card acted ae hostess for the evening, and an excellent programme of music followed by supper and •an impromptu danco were arranged* Contributing songs or other items were Mesdames J. A. Doctor, I. V., Wilson, A. E. Wickens, E. Barrv, Misses Rita Card, Bews, i. M. Bish, Moore, Esma Card, Esther Tiarry, Ila Card, H. Card and Mr. I. V. Wilson, accompaniments being played by Mesdames I. V. Wilson, A. E. Wickens, and Miss Bows. The dance music 1 was played hy Mesdames Wilson, Wickens, A. E. Burt,-and Misses Mahone, Bish, and Moore. Mrs. Wickens and Mi6s Bish had charge of the musical programme, and Mesdames Chalmers and Barry the supper arrangements. The stage and tables were very prettily decorated with flowers. On behalf of residents tho Deputy-Mayor, Mr. M. B. Tnit, presented the guests of tho evening with a silver salver with tho inscription: "Presented to George Fonwick, Esq., by his friends of the Feathorston district as a token of their regard and the high esteem in which he has ever been lield as manager of the Bank of Now Zealand, Featherston,' 1895-1920." Together with this token, was a slight "overflow" which was enclosed in an" envelope. Several speechas eulogistic of Mr. and Mrs. Fcnwick and of their services in many direction were raado.

A quiet wedding was solemnised at the Church of Our Lady o£ tho Hosary, ' Hamilton, on Monday, when. Mr. Walter .T.. Watts, late of the Tenth Keinforcements, 2nd Auckland Battalion, and second son of Mr. and Mrs. TV. Watts, of Feilding, was married to Miss Marjorie Why to Maitland, eldest daughter of the lale .Tames and Mrs. Maitland, of Pnrnell, Auckland. Tho Rev.
