'. ; » AN IDLE CHINAMAN SENT TO GAOL. ■ A -very long list of cases came before Mr. F. IC Hunt, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. A fair number of t'he cases were indictable and all these were'remanded. Hannah Brown was charged with being a rogue and'a vagabond in that she was found at 2.45 a.m. yesterday sleeping ill the polch of the Roman Catholic Church, Buckle Street. Sub-Inspector Willis saul that slie had not been before the Court for eleven years. The Uluro Home would not have lier because she was. a cantankerous old lady. She apparently had no phicc to go to. .le sub-inspector suggested that she should be remanded until Friday in order that tho police might see what could be done fov The remand was a™ l "™- Convicted of drunkenness, Jack lhompson and Martin Samuelson wero each fined 205., in default three days imprisonment. . . For committing a breach of his prohibition order, Arthur Stevens was hired "(K, in default three days' Imprison, incut, and a similar pcnally>as inflicted upon him for drunkenness, ' . Geor-e H. Dench, who was convicted of drunkenness a few days ago; was n»ain convicted yesterday and fined -o=-, in default seven- days' imprisonment. While he was drunk lie was found with a brand new' pair of boots, value for which he was unable to account. 1 <- was convicted of theft and sentenced io sevon days' imprisonment. _ Sum Foolc Nam, who was before the Court a dav or two ago on a charge or -being ail idle and disorderly person in that, he was found sleeping in, a carriage, was again before the trato yesterday on a similar charge, the previous occasion tho agains him was withdrawn on the understanding that the Chinese Society would maU provision for him. Sub-Inspector■ Wi lib said that the Chinese did not want the mail for they said he would not and 'suited that ho should be sent to gaol and made to work. The; Magistrate adopted this view and sent him to pnson for a month. ... Richard Best, 22 years, pleaded „mlty to a charge that unlawfully and without colour of right, but not so as to be guilty of theft, lie took one motor-cycle, valuo JMa, the property of J. W- Johnston, i apier. Chief-Detective Ward staled that the accused rode the motor-cycle down to '\shhurst, where some accident happenei to the machine and he abandoned it Latei Best was arrested and sentenced to month's imprisonment for being lllie • illy on premises.
