Trees ofton live to a very graat age, anil while they are standing it is a dimcult matter to arrive at their age; but when l:h«y have been cut down the age o£ the tree may be reckoned by counting the number of rings visible in the flection. A recent London tog cost .£8250 in extra lighting alone, and altogether—taking into acoount lost traffic receipts; lost time, and smaller items such as fog signals—probably cost the city nearly JtibfiOO, or j«SO for «t«t7 ton of tog.
