AMERICA AND BRITAIN
. c BETTER FEELING PREVAILING. Mr. Crawford 'Vaughan, who was labour Premier of Soutli Australia from 191-4 to 1917,' has lately returned to Australia from a visit to t'ha United States extending over nearly throe years. To a representative of tlio "Sydnoy Morning Horuld" Mr, Vaughan expressed confidence in ft much hotter feeling now prevailitisr in the United Slates with regard to Great Britain than some tipio ago. Tliq people generally, ho said, were realising that unity between the Englishspeaking nntions was the first consideration and that no efforts should be spared to cultivate friendly relations; For Australia, he added, there was a, deep affection amongst the people of the United States, who Tccogiused to the full the great services which Australians had rendered in the war. Thero was also a strong desire to cultivate trade relations with Australia. On the question of the possibility of the United States concluding a separate wnce with Germany, Mr. Vaughan was vory definite. "I came," ho said, into close relation with all parties, and I am convinced that a separate pcaco treaty is neither probable nor possible. Iho Presidential olection was not fought on the issue of joining tlio Leaguo of Nations, but liinged entirely on the popularity or otherwise of the Wilson regime. Tho conclusion I arrived at is that ultimately tlio United States will ]oin the League of Nations with some slight modifications of the agreement.' During the ! latt-r part of Mr. tauglmns slay a strong movement had set in for dirtj 011 wool, and in his opinion • Amrnlian woolgrowers must be prepared' foi fiscal change* in such a direction.. Trade m tho United States was guttering great!} from inflation, also from'tho operating unfavourably on export*, a tho effect upon prices of goods had been very great, hoods of aU o. Kcriptions had decreassd in p" extremely serious degree.
