9 SECOND DAY'S PLAY. By 1 Telegraph—Prem Association, Dunedin, Docember 29. Tho New Zealand chess tournament was continued to-dny. Tho following is tho result of the four games played:— Dunlop v. Davies (Queen's Gambit Declined).—After an exchange of pawns the! bishop took a knight at king's bishop, threo to be retaken by ithe queen at move 19. White played a knight to king's four, to which black replied queen to queen's two. White began now to develop an attack. Black played a knight ib knight's five, and the queen took a pawn, offering herself as a sacrifice, which was not acoepted. Rook to queen's square waa next moved, but white replied with rook to queeu'e three, afterwards attacking ilho knight, which could not be defended. On tho twentyninth move Davies resigned a hopeless gamo.
Gyles v. Mason CRuy Lopez),—The gamo opened' in. tho usual way. White won-a pawn on the sixteenth move, and | this led tb an exchange of queens. A j bishop for a knight and a rook were I'eaeh taken off. At movo 2o white went wrong; he lost a piece, but still fought 011. Next came an exchange of rooks. After that some very interesting play j ensued, but white, being a piece short, j was ultimately compelled to resign or. the I fifty-third move.
