MANAWATU MEETING
STAKES WON BY BLACKMAIL BONNIE MAID WINS BIG ' HANDICAP By Telegraph.—Special Reporter. Palmerston North, December 28. The Mannwiv.hi Racing Club's Summer Meeting was advanced a further s'.iige .yesterday. The weather was squally, sunshine and rain intermingling. Tho track ' was dead. The Jotalisator handled .€55,874, a slight falling-off compared with the corresponding day last year. All went to the post for the Kelvin Handicap, and the public supported Festivity, Sweet Song, and A 7 asilkov in that order. Passenger and Royal Gift paced the field for seven furlongs, when All Cerise took charge, but over tho !«6t one hundred yards La Paloma came fast, and got up in time to win by half a length. Sweet Song, who was well placed all tho way, was a length away third. Then came Passenger and Festivity, while Namur was well back, la«t. Maniahera, Vigilo, and Multive were the public fancies for the To Matai Hurdles, for which all the acceptors went to the post. Vigilo and Maniahora made play for six furlong, where Multive and Goldstream. with • Explorer handy, went up to the leaders. Coming to the last fence, Maniahera, who was going woll, enmo down, and Multive went on to win by two lengths, with Explorer a long way back third. Sail Home was fourth. An inquiry into the miming of ono oi the competitors was adjourned till this evening. ' Automoana. Gallia, and Waimahoe wero withdrawn from the Highden Handicap, leaving Barleycorn, who did not race the previous day, was favourite, Valley Rose, Strategy, and Canyon being next in demand. From' a good start Yankee Dan and Shamrock wore first prominent, but Strategy took charge at tho five furlongs, and from then on was nover troubled, cventually winning by two lengths. Yankee, Dan, Kuia, and Barleycorn all ilhrew out challenges over the last bit, but they could make no impression on the leader, and Kuia, finishing best, cut Yankee Dan out of second money by half a length, with the favourite fourth. Hyttus and Moutoa Ivanova declined their engagements in the President's Handicap, for which the public installed Isabel a good favourite, Marqueteur and Bonnie Maid also 'being well supported. Passing the stand the first time Bonnie Maid had command from Lovematch, Isabel, Dusky Eve, and Marqueteur, with Cleft tailed off. Going out of the straight Lovematch ran to the front and Dusky Evo took second position. This order was maintained round the back and to the straight entrance, where Bonnie Maid took charge. Isabel and Dusky Eve challenged the Trentham mare, but failed to sustain their run?, and Marqueteur cut down the pair, failing, however, to reach Bonnie Maid by half a length. Isabel was a fair third, and then came Dusky Eve; and Lovematch. Affectation .was made an even money favourite in the Palmerston North Stakes, Little Paver and Dunedin each also carrying over a thousand pounds. Little River wa9 first out, just ahead of Blackmail and Affectation, but with a furlong gone Blackmail was in front, Affectation having gone back to fifth. Entering the straight Blackmail was clear of Princess Pat and Little River, with | Affectation and Wnrplane coming fast. Blackmail,' however, finished strongly, defeating AVarplano by a length, Affectation, who got a bad run on the' fence, being a head in front of Little River. ■Fourteen starters faced the barrier in tho Terrace Welter Handicap', for which Hymarty was considered to be the best of those engaged. Minsk and Hymarty w*ro first to break tho line, American Beauty, Goolwa, and Flight Commander being just behind the leaders at the head of a bunched field. The first-named pair were still in the vnn on entering the straight, American Beauty and Goolwa still being handy, with Siberian and Misslovo next. In the run to t/ia post Minsk held her own, winning by half a length from the favourite, who tiivd badly over the last half furlong. Siberian was a fair third, just in front of Misslore and American Beauty. Railand, who had Gray in the saddle, was made a warm favourite for the Himitangi AVelter Handicap, with Bsr,>alis and Nobleman next in demand. Borealis was always flrst .or secoiuL Omahu and Sycorax being second and third over the early stages. Nobleman put in a big effort over the last furlong, but Borealis maintained his U-mu winning by half a length, the favourite being a similar distance aivay third. Sycorax was fourth arid Idle Talk next.
All but Chimera started in the Awnpuni Handicap, and tho public invested solidly on Solfanello, Acre, and Parisian Diamond. From a good jump out Sweet Corn was quickly in front, and she stayed there till the turn.. There BorJ.y Briar and Astinonie passed the MnlstiT mare, Bonny Briar winning easily by three lengths. Solfanello finished.fast and beat Astinome fpr second money by a length. DETAILED RESULTS. • _By Telegraph—Press Association. . KELVIN 'HACK HANDICAP, of. 250 sovs. One milo ar.d 55 yards.
