JAPAN'S CENSUS
—:—« OVER 77 MILLIONS. The following interesting particulars referring to the-latest census, returns of the population of the Japanese Empire on October 1' have been cabled by the Imperial Japanese Government to Mr. IvT Tamaki,, Acting Consul-General in Sydney. Total population of the Empire, 77,005,510, composed ns follows:— Japan proper 55,901,110 Korea , 17,284,207 Formosa 3,054,338 Saghalicn 105,765 These figures, the cablegram states, are less bv about 1,000,000 than the estimated population in 1918. The decrease, however, is staled to bo due not to any actual loss, but to the inaccuracy of the method employed in making the former estimate. Tho total population of Japan proper consists of 58,042,995 males and 27,918,145 female?, being 124,850 more males than female;. Tho populations of the nrincipal towns are given as follow -.—Tokio, 2173102Osaka. 1,252,972; Kobe, 008,290; 'Kyoto,' 42252. ; fc»SW"». 429,990; Yokohama,
