THE TRADE BALANCE
For the eleven months ended November 30. tho "Trade Review"" sets down the adverse trade balance of New Zealand at .£13,072,179 of imports over exports. Of this adverse balance .£11,098,377 occurred in thc-last five months of the period in review. Substantial increases arc shown in importations of apparel, boots and shoes, carpets, drapery, hats and caps, hosiery, millinery, cotton and woollen piece goods, hardware and other manufactures of metals, confectionery, sugar, wines and spirits, tea, coat, china and glassware, leather and its manufactures, motor vehicles (.£2,523,193. -as compared with .81,033,908 Inst year), benzine and all other oils, cigarettes, tobacco and .cigars, Tho values only are given by the "Reviow" in the table hereunder consideration, and in this higher prices must b} taken into account- On the other hand, and for all tho enhanced prices, tho following increases In volume are ito bo noticed:—
Tobacco and cigarettes, pounds 4,731,256 3,714,805 Preserved- fish, lbs. .'.. *,450,080 2,250,007 The "Review" doscriues the trade position an "one that requires immediate attention."
