By TeleeraDh.—Snecial Oorresoondtnt. Auckland, December 27. The Auckland Bacing Club's summer meeting opened. to-day.in line weather. There was a record attendance, including the Governor-General and Lady Jellicoo. Tho course was in excellent order, and the racing gt>od. The Cup provided a fine contest, there being a great finish, between the placed/ horses. The totalisator. handled £151,188, compared with ,£124,916 last Boxing Day. . ' In the big field for the Shortland Plate Forest Gold, Bonnie Heather, and Geoffrey were all well backed. Early Dawn took command early, with Forest. Gold and'Bonnie Heather handy. Entering the straight the leader was joined by the other pair, but she put up a stout resistance." Over the last bit Geoffrey asserted himself and won by a neck from Bonnio Heathor; who just headed Early Dawn. Forest Gold was fourth. Mermin, who looked trained to the hour, was a hot favourite in the Foal Stakes, and after The Hawk had paced him doing his test for five furlongs the favourite came away and easily from The Hawk with Maunu and Grotesque together a couple lengths away. Prince Jewel and Tinohoro were both big fancies for tho Robinson Handicap, and of the two Tinohoro did the best, but he was unequal to conceding "Lovelight 311b. Tho latter won by a neck after a great finish. Hyrax' was a length away and Clonmel was fourth.

The big crowd v present all pressed forward trying to got a glimpse of the runners for the Cup. In the birdcago nothing looked better than First Salute, while Gasbag also stripped well. After a perfect start Gasbag and Oratress showed out, while Nightraider immediately droppod to the rear. After going half a mile, Blue Cross and Prince Willonyx took charge and they led Gasbag past the judge the first time, with the others handy, Uncle Ned and Teiiterfield being most prominent. The positions were unchanged at tho five furlongs, where Oratress was whipping a bunched field, except Nightraider, who was tailed off. Entering the straight Blue Cross was done with and Gasbag, Starland-and Woody Glen all appeared in front, while First Salute got up on the inside. Over the last two furlongs Starland, Gasbag, and and First Salute were clear of the others, and after a great struggle Staihmd won by a neck from First Salute, who beat Gasbag by a head. Oratress was fourth, and then came Woody Glen and "Uncle Ned. Nightraider was pulled up. Tho scrntchings were Glen Canny, Sunart and ICilgour, who have gono soro.

Tho Grafton Hurdles' was a triumph for Paddington Green, who just got up and outod Oakleigh after the latter bad led all the way. Khartoum was prominent behind Oakleigh over tho Inst five furlongs, and after a good struggle for second place tho judge was unable to divide -thorn. liiiperino was fourth.

The Railway Handicap was mnned by a bad start, half tho field getting away badly- King Abbey and Miss Gold were through the tapes when they went up, but tho riders thought it was "no start" and pulled up, /badly interfering with Humbug. Golden Bubble led Statuette to tho top of the hill, with Silver Link liandy. Going down the hill Statuettn took charge and she led into the straight from Golden Bubble and Silver Link. In the straight Arrowsniith and Rossini put in challenges, but Statuette maintained her advantnse and won comfortably by a length from Silver Link, who hoa.t Right and Left by a head. Dovelet was fourth.

Unahi was the public fancy for tho Nursery Handicap, with Toa Taua second choice. Leithfield. another of Mr. G. L. Stead's team, mnde a one-horse rnco of it. He jumped out in front and led all tho wav. Unahi did not get off well, but he finished on and cut Toa 'J'aim out of 6oeond money. Soultcrina" ivas fourth. Tigritiya tried to win the Christmas Handicap from end to end, but she tired badly over tho last half furlong, and Maioha just caught her on the post.
