CALEDONIAN SPORTS

BIG CROWD AT THE BASIN

VARIED AND INTERESTING PROGRAMME

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING

Signal success attended the sports gathering held under the auspices of the Wellington Caledonian Society atl the Basin Reserve yesterday. Fortunately the weather held fine, although a blustery nor'-wester was' in -evidence for the greater part of the day, and the sports wero witnessed by upwards of 7000 spectators. The takings at the gate realised at least .£320. Dancing M.d bagpipe' music occupied pride of place, on the programme, and for the various events there were" large entries, competitors being present from all pariS of the Dominion. The djmcing contests were especially attractive, and the judges had no easy task in deciding the merits of the competitors. Miss Jean M'Kensuo, of Wellington, secured Mr. L. 11. Partridge's gold medal, and Mr. Duncan M'Kenzie (Dannevirke) Mrs. T. W. Les. lie s gold medal for their excellent! performances in the Highland dancing. During the afternoon a programme of athletic events was followed with keen interest, and the organisers of the sports, of which Mr. T. W. Leslie was convener, are to be congratulated on the large number of entries which were forthcoming. The Basin Reserve wns in excellent condition, apd some close finishes were recorded. .The programme included several events which have not been 6een in Wellington' previously, namely, throwing the javelin and throwing the discus. Tho first-named event went to K tr. Sutherland (Wellington) with a throw of 112 ft. Sin., and P. Mnnro (Wellington) was successful in throwing the discus, Jiis distance being 120 ft. |Bin. After a lapse of 12 or 13 years oyclo racing was revived at tho sports, tho big_ event being the two miles handicap, which attracted nearly a dozen starters. This race was most exciting, for tho handicaps were fairly big. H. Oakley, of Masterton, starting from scratch', made tho paco a hot- one after a couple ot laps had boen ridden, and lie finished up in fifth position after a great race. Tho spectators were pleased with Oakley's performance, and he was tho recipient of a well-merited round of applause when lie dismounted, The (raw was won by 11. Kick, of Masterton, who had a handicap of 130 yards. The 200 yards Wellington Provincial Championship drew six. competitors, and mas won by J. M. Carrick, of Canterbury, 11. Haj vice (Wellington) being second. Carrick did particularly well in tho sports, and he carried off the Gillies ChallengeCCutp t and gold medal as being the winner of tho Caledonian Grand Handicap for most points in the 100 yiaids, 220 yards, 410 yards, and 880 yards handicaps. It was ihoped that H. 111. Wilson, the champion hurdler, would have been a participant at the sports, but owiuff" to the fact that lio sprained one of his ankles while playing tennis on Saturday he was not able io compete, and. had to play the role of a spectator.
