REPRESENTATIVE TEAM IN ACTION PRACTICE MATCH ON BASIN RESERYE There'was a good attendance at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon to witness a match between the Wellington representatives, who are to play Canterbury next week at Christchurch, and the Wellington' second eleven. The wicket was in excellent order, and the strong north-west wind did not 'hamper play. Each man was allowed 1 thirty minutes at ~ the wicket provided he dm not make more than thirty runs or was put out during that time. This was done with the idea of giving practice to both teams. Warne, who had injured Jtiis finger while practising recently, wee tho only member of the representative team who was absent. Although neither side managed to secure a double century, some good play was seen. Batting for the representative team, Hiddleston/ and M'Girr gave a good display, as also did M. Nicholls for the second eleven, whi]e Finlayson, whose left hand deliveries were respected by the batsmen, was the best bowler. The Wellington representatives elected to bat first, and. Hiddleston and Phi.l- . lips opened to Barclay and Finlavson. When the score stood at 28' Finlayson Raptured Phillips's wicket. Lambert was fisxt man, and faoedl Aldersley, who had replaced Barclay at the northern end. . Lambert was 16 when he gave a. chance t° M. Nicholls at point, but this player feutd to accept.- Hiddleston now retir- ' e-JTto be replaced by Sehraeder. : After playing,'good cricket for a few minutes Lambert was caught by Finlayson in the slips. Middleton, the next man, was given l.b.w. off Aldersley before he had ecored._ ,Christoplierson, in the outfield, was doing good work, and assisted materially in keeping down the score. Finlayson captured' Burton's middle stumo when that player had made seven, runs. Schraedar then retired, and a few minutes later G. Baker was run out. M'Girr and Hutchings were now at the wickets, but 1 the partnership did not last long, Hutchings falling to Finlayson when the score, stood at 315. M'Girr soon struck form, and well within the. time allotted him hitidf rattled up 41 runs, including six fours. Cate was the last man, but did not get a chance to score, his partner, Brice, being caught by Bmce a. few minutes later. . ' The second eleven went in requiring 15G runs to win, and accomplished this for the loss of nine wickets. M. Nicholls a.nd Doiieghne opened to Brice nnd Hutchings. It was not-long, before M. Nicholls, was Teplhcedi by Aldersley, Nicholls having made his 30 runs in fine style. Then Doneghue, who had plaved a careful innings, sncenmboi to Brice. Aldersley, Bruce, and Finlavson letircd in turn, each having completed thirty minutes at the wickets.' Hiddleston, who had relieved Brice, was bowlin<r a good length, felting the wickets of.
