LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
THE BUTTER SUBSIDY Sir,—ln The Dominion of Docombor 14. appeared n, letter on tho question of subsidising farmers' butter, in which Thomas Prngly seems to liavo hit the nglit track, If the Government were nt nil kefrn on tho matter they would lmve found out that the "grading" of farmers' butter was a matter of 110 importance. Of coura. the merchant would naturally _ uso the. "grading" stunt as a blind, what is happening now? The country storekeeper is receiving more lump butter than ho can dispose of locally. What becomes of it? Wily, irrespective of colour, smell, or taste, it is clumped into boxes and the storekeeper and the man who "mills" it divido a proilt of Bd. to lOd. per lb. Wh'ore is our 11r. Holland? Does he not "work" on behalf of the small man? And tho-Leader of the Opposition? Is he still worrying over tlio price of paint which prevents him making his house look festive for Christmas? It is hard that tho small farmer, who has to sell his wool below cost of production, should be penalised that tho man in tho town with his ever-increasing "bonuses" should get cheaper butter.—l am, etc.. SIMON YORKE. Waiholte Valley, Eketaliuna, i December 16, 1920.
