A Selcct Parliamentary Committee has inquired into the dangers arising from the carrying of concealed firearms. It recommends that except in the case of specially-auihoriscd persons, the carrying of such aims shall bo absolutely prohibited under a penalty of imprisonment ranging from one day to ten years; and that pointing a weapon should be made a statutory offence. Parents should _be made responsible for boys using pea-rifies and for tho safety of other firearms in their possession. "All sales of arms must b> properly "ecordod. Statistics showed, \ the Committes states, that between 1913 and 1920 inclusive, 417 deaths had' occurred in Australia from tho criminal use of firearms, \niid 208.from accidental discharge, -besides which over 500 people wcro seriously injured.—Press Assn. ROBBERIES AND MURDER IN NEW . YORK AN ALARMING INCREASE, New York; December 17. Tho number of robberies, _ burglaries, : hold-ups, and murders has increased to such an alarming extent that the Silversmiths' Association has protested to the Mayor, declaring that the police protection is inadequate, and demanding immediate protection. The organisation also proposes to protest to the Governor of the State, and to create a body of -"vigilante" . to protect the jewellers interested. .
